Well this time was a little different. I did not have to save My buddys life! It starts by we are sitting around after working all day. Having a beer of course! Yes us rednecks drink beer & hunt! So anyways BD says want another beer. I say no I'm gonna go walk up the trail see if I can catch a hog. He says allright I will start the fire & dinner. So I take off down the road. Hit water turn around find a place to cross. Get about 300 yds in. Then I hear something walking away from Me in the mud. I think dang they busted Me the wind was in My face though. So I sneak up & around 10 yds. Stop & hear a loud sniffing sound, Like when a deer blows at you. I look across from Me. I see a hogs head, nose up in the air facing away from Me. So I stand on My toes to get the clearest shot I can. Boom let'er rip no thump just short squeel. I think dang I bad shot gonna have to track in the dark. so I wait a few minutes. Then I start walking over where I seen the pig. Get on the trail see blood all over the grass & bush. Then I think yes yes yes opened him up good. Walk up to the bush looking at the blood only. Look to My right there he was laying there, sleeping the eternal sleep. Bad to look at just the ground. If He was alive 3 feet away & pissed off ?????? ouch. So thanks to God for blessing Me with a good friend & family that lets do this kind of stuff. P.S. We don't really drink beer & hunt thats just for comedic value.

A few years ago, we came around a corner in a Jeep while pig hunting my friends ranch outside Williams, CA and busted a group of about six HUGE pigs, they looked like Black Angus cows.

We jumped out and opened fire. It was close to dark.

They ran off and we started going up hill looking for blood.

We didn't see any right away so I went back to the Jeep and traded the rifle for a small flashlight.

I went up a draw, bent over, scanning back and forth real close to the ground with the wimpy flashlight, looking for any blood. It was dark by now.

I heard a grunt, looked up and I was about to step on a HUGE wounded boar! I swear he was 24 inches from me!

The other guys were searching for blood nearby. I ran backwards about 20 yards and yelled to bring a rifle over and shoot him. I was a little excited, to say the least. The closest guy came up and only had a pistol. He was too afraid to get close and shoot it. Another guy came up with a rifle and shot it.

The three of us could not pick it up to put it on the tailgate, it was too heavy. The tusks were all broken off. It was the size of a small cow. We finally backed up against a bank and dragged it onto the tailgate. I have a picture somewhere.

The next year, another member of our group shot a big pig on the ranch, walked up to gut it, and it jumped up and gored him real bad, opening up his gut and hospitalizing him.

Hey guys... I'm in the military and stationed in Lemoore and Coalinga seems to be the closest place to hunt hogs...
I don't expect for anyone to give away trade secrets but if someone could point me in the right direction for hog hunting in the public land west of Coalinga that would be great...
Thanks!

Mostly it's private land where the pigs come from. I have hunted public up there a couple times. For deer only though. So I can't really give any advice. I know there are a few public areas though. I've been thinking about taking a military person hunting with me. I'm going to be gone this next week. I'll figure it out when I get back. Anyways good luck Hope everyone has a great thankgiving.

The Clear Creek BLM management area is where I've hunted. Never got a pig there, though, but I was only there during a very dry year a few years back: http://www.blm.gov/ca/hollister/faqs.html I understand some good pigs come out of there on occasion.

Ft. Hunter Ligget would probably have a better chance of success, and isn't too far from Coalinga, or the Arroyo Seco part of the Los Padres, where I got one a few years back.

your best bet would be mineral springs area west of coalinga off hwy 198...but you'll work for any hog you get there...good luck and happy hunting.

Nice pig wavesfr!

JoeWA and friends...

Last night (the Friday after Thanksgiving) I drove with a friend from San Lucas (on Hwy 101 just south of King City) over 198 to Coalinga.

At the intersection of Highway 198 and Highway 25 at 5pm there were about 20 wild pigs right there on the ranch in the south-west corner. They were eating what the 2 steer were eating and the steer didn't seem to mind their company. They weren't to skittish so we hung out for ten minutes on the roadside and just watched em while we stretched our legs.

I'm sure it's a private ranch but I'm also sure it has hogs.

If you find out who it is tell them you're coming from N.A.S. Lemoore. Maybe they've got a soft spot for military.

Good Luck

I know someone else who has some pet hogs on that road. Pet quail, too. He's a real life, freaking Dr. Doolittle.

Funny thing is - that's his nickname at work - "Do-little"..

Hey BirdDawg - how is your little zoo doin'?

New to hunting pig and just came back for cleer creak and coalinga mineral springs...some tough hunting and didnt seee anything but coyotes. I saw some signs but seem like they were just goin through the area. anyone seen anything in these areas lately? It is my first time being in that area and hunting pig so i could have just made rookie mistakes or there really wasnt any pigs.
