I know where the Tejon Ranch is located but I'm not familiar with the pig hunting and Pig O Rama hunts. What does it cost and what are the details.
Metdawg,

Check out the JHO Pig O Rama info at the top of the Hog Forum. This'll be the third (I think?) annual JHO Hog Hunt. Lots of other info on Tejon available via search as well.

Tejon, at $400 for 2 1/2 days of wide open hunting is a great option, whether you hunt the JHO hunt or one of the other PORs. Definitely worth checking it out.

Hey Rich, have you tried that Tejon pig meat yet?

Sorry to hear about the fever. Unfortunately, the only remedy is periodic doses of pig hunting. It only serves to correct the symptoms for a short period. There is no cure...and thank God for that!

also they allow 75 per side, or 150 total.

I just got an email from Barbara about the March POR, looking like 30%, which is actually better than I though it would be, I guess quite a few guys tagged out Sunday after lunch when we left.

good luck in May guys, I would be there but my best friend is getting married, and yes I have tried to talk him out of it.

Tim, we been eating on those hogs at least twice a week since we got the meat all butched up.
I decided to have 25lbs of Hot Links and 25lbs of Polish sausage made out of the meat along with all the regular stuff. We only have three packs of hot links and five or so of the polish left.
I just took a ham out of the freezer and my son and I had ham sandwiches for lunch everyday at work and school, then we took 4lbs of the ham and made pinto beans and ham (awesome).

The meat is so much better than store bought I can't say enough good things about it. Those tejon critters live on a good diet of acorns and that probably helps the taste.

I know you already had some meat in your freezer, have you managed to eat any of yours yet?
*8* weeks and counting till the May POR and I am starting to get the fever again.
I am going to have to get some ideas on meat care for that hunt. It should be warm in late May and I really don't know what were going to do if one of us gets a hog on the first day.
I am taking the motor home this trip so I don't have to stay in a hotel.
Anyone have recommendations?

It would be cool to see you again, if you can make the May POR I am on the South side once again.

Get the biggest marine sized ice-chest you can find...Costco usually has them.

Next, freeze 2-liter soda bottles filled with water - a dozen will work.

I'll have those, and a few bags of ice in my chest or chests - they'll stay frozen for a long time. If I take a pig, it gets dressed and skinned, wrapped in plastic, and put into the chest with the frozen bottles inside the body cavity, and on top of the pig.

pack your ice-chest properly, you don't want alot of air-space. I use wadded up newspapers to fill the dead space in the chest - your ice will last alot longer, and things will stay colder.

Rich, exactly what Rancho Loco said. Frozen two-liter bottles is what I use. I have a huge cooler that I take on all my large game hunts. Works out great. One word of advice, I wouldn't count on lots of ice in the near by town. Twice now we've stopped on the way out and all three gas stations were out.

I'm down to about 3 more pork roasts in the freezer. Great eating and we've cooked it several different ways. My favorite is an over night marinade and then on the BBQ. I'm hoping that once the meat is gone, I'll get to go on another trip this year, but not sure when.

Good luck!

I will start looking at Costco for this "Marine" ice chest you guys are talking about. I have one of the biggest ice chest I have ever seen 36" L x 16" W x 18" H, my little 80lb hog barely fit inside that so I know you guys have to have a much bigger one.

Does dry ice last longer than regular ice? just curious if that would help in any way.??

There are three of us hunting so it looks like we will have to have three complete setups. I am buying a large freezer for the garage this weekend to store my game meat since my smaller one just doesn't have the capacity with my son now hunting.

I will do a couple dry runs with the ice chests before I go hunting to see just how cold I can make them stay.

You guys are definitely more experienced, so this is the route I will go, the news paper idea is excellent, I can see how it would help keep the stuff frozen longer.

Thanks RC and Tim.

Don't forget to drain the water, too.

Keep the icechest in the shade...Or cover it loosely with a silver tarp.

Don't keep opening it every few minutes for a beer..I usually have the big chest and a smaller chest - the smaller chest gets the beer.

Found a picture from Feb's POR, it was cold and foggy as all hell.

You can barley make out my silver truck just behind my head and only 60yrds away.
The hogs are laying exactly where they were shot... This was my sons first time hunting, very cool indeed.

Hey Rich, great picture. Great to have the hogs close to the truck too. I had to drag mine over 500-yards solo.

Your pigs were definitely yearlings (this years crop). Probably close to the 6-8 month range and I'm willing to bet they tasted great.

Good luck on the next hunt. Man, that foggy picture has me thinking about another hunt soon.
