Kind of a late report. But after all hte rain that hit the area last Sunday the piggies decided to go on the move. My dad went out last Tuesday night(23rd) and scored this bad boy. Had some huge tusks on him. Dressed out at 212.

The excitement of the night though was after hitting the pig, he went into some thick brush to lay down. After 30 mins or so of waiting my dad went in to try and find him. When he spotted the pig in the brush, he couldn't tell if it was dead or not. So as he backed out of the brush pile, the pig exploded at him. Charged straight out the same direction my dad was exiting. Only had enough time to swing his gun into line with the pig(gun was already pointing forward) and pull the trigger. He couldn't have made a more perfect off hand self defense shot. Bullet went in right between the shoulder blades and broke it's back bone. Pig fell dead at his feet. Talk about scare! The tusks would have tore his legs up.

Here's the picture of the monster.

Great job by your dad

This same story keeps coming up about close calls and some quick off hand shooting. Practicing that shot can be a little hard to do (side arm needed?), always assume there alive and pissed off!! Especial with those cutters, ouch!

One more argument in favor of packing a side-arm (oops, different forum).

Congratulations to your Dad. That's some mean looking tusk. I hate to imagine what it will do to your legs, or somewhere a little up there, without those quick reflexes.

Congradulations to your dad, that's one hell of a pig.
He'll make an awesome European mount with those cutters.

That would be nice, but no side arms allowed on Vandenberg.

That's exactly what he's going to do. Saved the head. Just has to get it to someone who can do it now. Should look good when it's done.

Congrats, that's one heck of a hog. Had to be a couple anxious moments there with your dad, that's great, though. Performance under pressure, you can't beat that! What an excellent looking boar, too.

I hava a friend that was knocked of his feet by a hog that had been shot fist by a rifle, then by a 357 pistol round. He's an expert shot with a pistol and still didn't do enough to prevent what happened.
For me a pistol is not enough. This hog was pissed when it went after me. I'm glad I had my rifle. 270 150grn nosler partition between the shoulder blades. About the scariest thing that ever happened to me hunting. Never been charged before but I knew fom friends and things I've seen that they can get mean. I was in the ready position when he charged. After he plowed the ground and died in front of me (1 second) I let out a scream and holler! That was a rush and many different things go thru your head in a short time. I'm ready to go again though!

And that is what it's all about. Welcome to Jesse's. There's some good hog huntin' threads on here.

Oh yeah! That really sucks. FHL does not prohibit sidearms. You just cannot hunt with them if the barrel is less than 6 inches. I figure, (before my 45ACP was lost) that I can buy a 6-inch barrel and I'm good to go.

Hi Beastslayer,

I'd asked one of the girls who works down there and she advised against bringing a sidearm that didn't have a 6 inch barrel. She didn't seem sure of the point if it wasn't my primary hunting weapon though. To be clear, have you had a less than 6 inch barrel sidearm down there without problem?
