The pigs are definately about!

Our buddy Josh (same guy who got the Elk at FHL) came up on Sunday to do some pig hunting here at VAFB. He's Navy so he's able to hunt on base with no problem. They've been hunting every day this week through the gale force Northwesterly winds. I wasn't able to hunt, but I kept thinking it's ugly out there! They saw pigs every day, but weren't able to close the deal on any as it was either sows with piglets or the conditions didn't allow a sneak. Finally Wednesday night they were able to close the deal and recovered him this morning. Here's the story as my dad tells it to me....

"First three days there was lots of action but no shots. Wednesday morning we changed the plan because it had been so windy. We started out hunting high and I eventually moved low while Alan and Josh stayed high along the ridge. I went down a road to a dead end and I had to turn around. When I started going back the direction I had just come from I had a little boar running right next to the truck, about 50 yards up. I called Alan and Josh over and we start working where the pig went but didn't see anything. Went further down the hillside and started glassing where I got my pig last week. Spotted a pig working up a draw, was a different pig I had just seen. We took off and went up the canyon giving chase. Watched the pig bed down in some thick cover and so we made the plan to come back to the spot right before. Turned out it was a good move.

Josh and I returned to that canyon about 530pm and the canyon was shaded in our face with the wind in our face... things were perfect. Got to about a 100yards from where we watched him go in that morning. Started glassing and suddenly spotted a dark object in the brush at the bottom of the canyon. It was him... game on! Worked to get closer and and then waited to verify that it was a boar. After about 15 minutes the pig stepped into a clearing and we got a good look. Josh setup with his .270WSM using 130gr TSX and made a 70 yard shot on the pig that was quartering away. We heard the pig run up into the thick cover and thrash around. Waited till we heard quiet before we started tracking. Immediately found good blood, but because it was now right at dark we didn't want to push our luck, just in case. Went back first thing in the morning and found the pig 10 yards further up trail."

179 lbs field dressed. Congrats Josh!

I can't believed my PSE sponsored, fellow bowhunter is using a gun on hogs again!! That's cheating Josh! Great pig though! You guys really need to save one or two for me.

There's still a bunch out there to be found. We're being kinda picky. The neat thing about this one is the fact that he beat up on Steve's pig a couple of weeks ago. He also had a nice set of cutters and Josh's intent was to mount it on the wall. The cape is at the taxidermist right now.

Great hunt; sorry I missed out on the shooting part. Thanks for saving the dragging part though!

I've been feeling cranky lately...maybe I need to hunt. You say the pigs are out?

Come on down Dan; we saw three shooter boars within 1/2 mile of this guy and we sat on the one Josh killed so he'd have a chance on it.

You can buy a drag strap from Allen. They are less than $10.

Momma says if I don't go hunting soon and stop being a turd, she's gonna whack me with a shovel. Lemme look at the calendar.

thanks Alan and Steve for all your help, Nick thanks for writing the up the post. it was a great hunt we were on a ton of pigs the whole week, what a blast...weekender21 sometimes you just have to use the right tool for the job...maybe next time tough! WOW what a awful bullet Barnes make, i mean i had to track this guy like 25 feet...and it held all of its weight and expanded perfectly everyone should just stop hunting cause these thing just make things too dead!!!
i'll post pictures of the bullet when i get back from breakfast.
thanks again Alan, Steve, And Nick.

No luck, I got on hogs Friday night and had them in the brush less than 50 yards in front of me last night but never got a shot. Maybe next time. The turkeys are waiting for you, I'll be up this week to look around. They usually get smart fast. Opening weekend has been really crowded the past few years!
