Saturday, 3/14/2015 I had the opportunity to hunt with Jeremy from Central Coast Outfitters. This is my second pig hunt with Jeremy after numerous with Alfred Luis. To be honest, I was a little concerned over the drought and how hot it would be that weekend. I was unsure how it would affect pig populations and hunting opportunities. My cousin Wes and I met Jeremy and Alfred in Los Alamos around 5:30 am to fill out some paperwork and be on our way to Cojo Ranch near Jalama Beach. As before I had brought my Excalibur Matrix 380 crossbow and Browning X bolt chambered in 300 wsm. Within an hour we spotted and stalked 2 shooter boars but the wind shifted and they smelled us before I could get into crossbow range. We moved on and lower down the road spotted another shooter hog that was skittish and ran off on us. Jeremy spotted a big boar down near the ranch head quarters and we took off after it. Unfortunately by the time we got to him he was trotting off to his bedding spot in some nasty thick brush. It wasn't even 10 yet and we had seen several nice shooter pigs. At this point it the quality of the pigs and the numbers of pigs had exceeded my expectations. It was getting pretty hot at this point so we decided to go up near a bunch of oak trees near the top of some mountains with the hope of catching some pigs gong to their bedding spot. We rounded a curve and saw a big group of pigs running down the hill toward some trees with a small spring underneath them. The did exactly as Jeremy had predicted ad we moved in. My cousin Wes came down the hill with my rifle so we go separated. I took my crossbow and Jeremy had a 338-06 rifle. We got to 36 yards of the pigs but I couldn't use the crossbow because we had brush blocking the shooting lane. The pigs started moving up the hill that they had just come down so the guide loaned me his rifle. I aimed for the biggest butt I could see and fired. I looked up and my pig was dragging his back legs and using his front legs to try to come toward me. When he got to 30 yards I fired my crossbow and missed unfortunately. The pig went down the ravine and I recocked the crossbow and put one right behind his shoulder and he expired in roughly 10 seconds. I couldn't use the guides gun for a follow up shot because it had jammed and we could not get another round in the chamber. The arrow was pretty much a complete passthrough with on a few inches of the arrow still in the pig. I was using an Excalibur Matrix 380 crossbow with a 260 pound draw. The arrows were black eagle executions with blaze vanes from South Shore Archery Supply. The broadheads were Manus Black Hornet 100 grain Serrated broadheads. I have been hunting with Central Coast Outfitters since 2007 and received the highest caliber of guiding from them over and over again
