Wild_boar_plus_Savage.jpg

This is a boar I hunted at Tioga Preserve, Pennsylvania last year. The first year I owned a modern digital camera. One of these days I'll learn how to convert "paper photos" to digital so I can share many more 99 Savage photos.

This 99 (.308) was a gift from my folks way back in the early 1970's. It has joined me for many successful hunts across North America.

My Dad (deceased 2004) hunted with a 99 Savage (300) for many decades. The older type with spool magazine and flip up tang sight. He shot several dozen elk during the years our family ranched in Park County, Wyoming. None got away.

99 Savage is a keeper!

I couldn't agree more. I've got a late 40's 99 in .300 sav. I love it. It's killed several wild hogs out here in CA. Still shoots 1" groups with factory ammo too. I'm holding on to her.

I've got one in 250-3000. It belonged to my wife's grandfather. I use it once in a while when calling coyotes. Mike

I love the 99s.
I haven't ever shot one, but have handled some.
I have hunted w/a couple hog guides in Central Ca that carry them.
An old-timer buddy of mine had a whole bunch, a WHOLE bunch, of various 99s.

They are just a neat rifle.

When I graduated from eight grade my father took me down to the gun store and told me to pick out a gun. I chose a .243 Model 99E Savage. So that was my first rifle. I shot my first five bucks with it.

A number of years later when my Grandfather died I inherited his 30.30 Model 99C Savage. I purchased a 300 Mag Model 70 Winchester when I started going elk hunting and a 7MM Browning BAR. Then when my Father died twenty years ago I inherited a number of Model 70 Winchesters and a .270 Model 721 Remington.

I have taken deer with each of the rifles. When I hunt blacktail in Calif I always take my 99E either as my primary rifle or my backup. It's a great little gun.

I have a nice one in .300 Savage that is very accurate. 'Bout lost it to a thief though, fortunate to get it and others back. It's a handy gun to carry when walking for deer here in Kansas in thick stuff. It's light, naturally comes up on target, and has a quick follow up if needed.

I am huge fan of the rifle and have a hard time passing up one when I find it on the sale rack. It getting hard to find one that is a deal.

I currently own three in 250-3000. Looking for a fourth for my youngest boy. Bidding on a 308.

I was given the first rifle, along with a model 1920 in 300 savage. Now I am search for a stith mount and matching scopes.

Mine have been used mostly for antelope and Mule deer.

Years ago in Pennsylania my mother carried a Savage model 99 in .300 savage. Took many a deer with it. The old man sold it when we moved to California in '61. Wish I had that one, but another one like it os on my wish list.

When I was about 11, I shot my first pig with a model 99 250-3000. What a sweet little gun that was. Belonged to my grandmother. Got stolen about 15 years ago, along with few other family guns. I still miss it today.

I bought last year at the Costa Mesa gun show a very nice condition Savage99 in .300 Savage caliber. I do not know exactly what model of the 99 it is. It is antique looking but in great condition. The clincher was I paid $269 for it. When I look at the gunstores, I see their Savage99 in good condition for $500 and up. Well, I was not looking to buy anything at the gunshow but happened to stumble on this table with the guy selling it for $289. When I hemmed and hawed about the price, he brought it down to $269. Then we went to the FFL licensed DROS table at the gun show and legally made the purchase and transfer and waited 10 days for it. I bought the .300 Savage ammo in 150 grns. for the rifle but I haven't fired it yet. One of these days I am going to mount a scope and zero it at the range and then, POP a PIG with it. My Savage99 is the blind magazine type. I have not inspected if it is rotary magazine or the stacked magazine type. Hope you guys get a good deal too one of these days. 'Nuff said.

Saying that the 99 is a "light" gun is far from the truth. It must weigh over 9 pounds. It's largest drawback, in my humble opinion. Of course, on the other hand, with the .300 savage round it makes it a sweet shooting gun.

I have hunted with my friend's early 99 in .300 savage and loved the gun. It has the tang peep sight and is very accurate. It is one of the early models and the workmanship on the action is outstanding.

Larrysogla: You can find out exactly when your 99 was made by going to http://www.savage99.com/ and entering your serial number! Report back with what you find!

I was tempted buying a 99 in 30-30 that I found in a local store, but I figured it was too pricey at $350. I guess I was wrong. I ended up with a new Winchester 94, because it was a lot lighter. I will add a 99 to my gun cabinet one day though!

In 1976 when I was 14 I shot a deer at 50 yards with a 308 caliber 99, first deer I ever got. In 1996, I shot an elk at 385 yards (we lasered it aferwards) with the same gun. That was my first elk. I had not hunted big game between 1978 and 1996 but I think those 99s shoot pretty good for a left handed amateur like me.

larrysogla:

You are welcome. I had found that site when my friend wondered how old his rifle was. It was handed down in his family and it turned out to be even older than yours. Isn't it amazing how well these hold up?

Cheers, George
