welcome to jho and the hunting forum Boarsonly. when you find some public land thats holding tons of wild pigs shoot me an email and will go whack some
, wish i could help you but i have only hunted wild pigs on privite land only so far! .....................tra
boars, do a little searching up at the top of the page where jesse has placed links to hunting pigs on public land. As far as I know there are not a lot of places to hunt wild pigs near bakersfield. Up toward fresno there are always riumors of them along the foothills and in the carrizo plains they also claim sightings.
IMHO, pony up for a guided hunt on the central coast or on the tejon ranch to learn the ropes and have a better chance at success.
The dfg report says that 95% of pigs in Ca come from private land. Cost of a ranch hunt Around $400.00 same as about 5 or so trips with a big truck with the gas prices. With 5% of pigs in ca on public land might take alot of gas to finally find one. Good luck
Try Camp Roberts , Ft Hunter Ligett and if you have a friend in the military you might get to hunt Vandenburg AFB.If you live in Bakersfield you might want to consider joining Wilderness Unlimited they have two ranch's in Teachappi that have pigs I have seen a lot of sign at one and one pig but I couldn't seal the deal. WU planted pigs at two ranch's close to Caliente and there is an archery only ranch in Santa Barbra county plus other ranch further north. If you have the time to go its worth a look. There is a lot of info on WU on this forum. There is a rival club called Golden Ram they have some pig properties two hundred or so miles north of Bakersfield. The above clubs memberships include your immediate family. Right now I am saving up for my son to hunt in Africa if he does well in high school. We had a thread some time back entitled " the Carizo Plain Hunters the few the proud" or something along those lines where on member killed a few nice boars on public land . The basic idea is to find private land boardering the public land and hope that the pigs bed in on the public land.
It's been a few years since I've been out there but Los Gatos Canyon outside of Coalinga is "said" to have pigs out there. There's a lot of BLM land that is rough and rugged but still huntable. I'd contact BLM and get them to send you some maps. Saw a lot of sign but never saw any pigs out there. Did manage to pop a coyote and saw a few deer. If it were me, I'd go expecting to shoot coyotes and hopefully come across a pig.
