Just wondering if anybody hunted the Tejon Pig O Rama last week, and how it went.

Just wondering.

NEWS NOTE -- Jim Matthews-ONS 17dec03

Tejon Ranch Pig-O-Rama produces record 93 hogs

FORT TEJON -- The first of five Tejon Ranch Pig-O-Ramas to be held in the 2003-04 season was this past weekend, and 159 hunters shot 93 pigs for a nearly 60 percent success rate, the highest of any Pig-O-Rama.

"This was the mother of all Pig-O-Ramas," said Don Geivet, the game manager of the Tejon. "It was tremendously successful. Our best hunt before this was a 40 percent success rate and most are around 35 percent."

Of the 93 hogs taken, the biggest was a boar that weighed 241 pounds field dressed taken by Leonard Izbicki of San Marcos from the south hunt area. The biggest hog from the north hunt area was a 203 pounder shot by Ernest Klemm Jr. of Ramona, and 198 1/2-pounder was taken by Tim McCrary of Bakersfield.

The hunt was held under adverse weather conditions that made roads impassable in many areas, but in spite of that handicap, a number of hunters reported seeing 50 to 100 hogs over the course of the weekend.

For information on the next four Pig-O-Ramas, which are scheduled for January 30-February 1, March 12-14, April 23-25, and June 4-6, contact Barbara Boeck at the Tejon Ranch at (661) 663-4288.

Man they are getting closer to the guiding success rates. I am sure its not easy hunting, and the harder you work, the better your chance for success will be.

Thats great.

I am going to have to try one of those soon.

Very nice pigs thank you for posting those. When you go on one of these hunts up there are you allowed to shoot more then one pig?

Thank you,

Jason

Oh yeah are they all about 300 bucks?

Congrats on a very successful hunt, Hoghunter! I'm drooling to get out there again, but I really wanna wait until the roads dry out.

Definitely in May, but maybe I'll get brave (and impatient) and try March again too.

Pigdream,

The PORs are all $300, plus $13 insurance. You're allowed to take one hog per hunter.

You are not allowed to shoot any other game, including varmints (coyotes, ground squirrels, jackrabbits, etc.). There's been a lot of talk about shooting varmints (or the temptation to do so) during other PORs, and I can guarantee that's a good way to get in hot water with the Tejon staff.

It's a danged good hunt, especially for the price.

The report I heard second hand was the roads were mostly impassable. One group left 3 trucks in the hills. One truck rolled, one was left winched to a tree and one stuck up to the axels.

That's very easy to believe.

The warnings are not over-stated. Those roads get UGLY in the rain, and unless you have some superior equipment and skills, your best bet is to keep to the low ground and, when in doubt, walk in.

As much as we laugh about it now, I came real close to some serious trouble up there, and I know I'm not the only one who had to have a little help last March.

It was a great hunt and thanks all.I didn't hear of anyone getting stuck on the north side but one guy broke down. It was perfect pig hunting weather, cloudy and cold friday and sunny and cold Saturday. Hey One Track, There was one Jeep up there with tractor tires on it. There was snow on the tops of the ridges.
Good Hunting Hoghunter

I tell ya what. I've been in that slippery scary mud up there, and charging it when I should have been walking in. I've had to tie my truck to a tree a few times, while I put the chains on all fours. Sure is fun though.

I could see Speck's oil pan from a 1000 feet below. Now I know why all the old timers drive jeeps up there. They're smarter than me. I have a buddy with a good jeep w/lockers, etc. He was going all over that ranch pulling people out of trouble. I just traded my Explorer in for an F150. Now I have a longer wheel base to contend with. I guess walkin' never hurt nobody.

Kinda makes ya wanta say, Hmmm.

Woo Hoo! It's beer:30. See ya!
