a friend and I are heading to roberts this weekend to try our luck. this'll be our second hunt, our first being semi-guided with Deedee at Bryson.

i know its supposed to start raining on Friday, but we're limited on time and will have to take what we can get when it comes to hunting.

it doesn't look like too many people hunt roberts, and there haven't been any reports lately.

not looking for specific spots, just general info. but if you want to give me specific spots, share away. :thumbs up2:
does anyone know what the area's looking like lately?

does roberts assign areas when checking in or is it more of a go where you please within the hunting boundaries kind of thing?

hopefully we get in atleast a day and a half of hunting there.

thanks

They don't assign areas, your free to roam, there are certain areas that are off limits though. I've only been to the camp about 4 times in the past 3 years and ive actually run into a group of pigs, shot but couldnt connect. Whenever I go I look at the their wall of harvest and it seems like pigs are taken in all areas so i wouldnt be able to point you in the right direction. I saw my group in area 2 early morning if that helps. Good luck!

Oh and Idk about everyone else but areas 1b 1c and 1d seem to be a waste of time to me, I've never even seen a bird out that direction! or any pictures of harvested game in those areas on their wall.

Free roam and they can close hunt areas any time they want.
It is supposed to rain Fri, Sat and Sun. Camp BOB is a pretty good place but it takes finding sign, fresh sign, which takes time. This time of the year they can be anywhere, when it's dry they come to the river every night and you can catch em going to bed.

Current schedule shows that the base will be open for hunting on the 18th. You may not enter early to scout.

Be careful with the roads, even with a 4x4 you can get stuck. Last year I almost got jammed up on a dirt road that is normally hard pack. With the rain it turned into goo.

Make sure you discuss the current area closures with the check station staff, Camp Roberts is working on their own version of the water project and some of the normal access points are shut down.

Went there last weekend for the 1st time. Not many hunters, and tons of rooting along game trails, but didn't find one. If weather permits, I would get in as far and as early as you can, find a trail, and walk it back toward the river. Maybe you can find one going to bed.

Be aware that the weekend forecast is for 1-3 inches with 3-5 in the mountains. Do not drive off the pavement if you can help it.

With that in mind, you might try the creekbed near the Black Bass Ponds.

Mr CS, I hunted that same spot a while back when the grass was wet and bent down just minutes before by the pigs and I walked for miles trailing the them but could not catch up to them. Now most spots will be good all over because of the rains. The new grass and a good acorn crop will the focus...

The acorns are surely all gone by now. The pigs will likely be concentrating on rooting and insects (which they generally get by rooting at the surface). Their rooting sign should be very easy to find this time of the year. Find their rooting areas, and place yourself in an area that overlooks lots of their rooting areas (preferably close to their bedding area)

Due to all the rain, they will likely be well dispersed, and obviously water is not an issue. So you should have decent luck in spotting pigs; but as always, harvesting one can be a different story. I hope you catch a nice weather window. Best of luck!

we didn't see any rooting, but we did see a lot of areas under trees where it looked like the pigs had been bedding recently, but i'm sure the rain chased em all away to thicker cover.

anyone know what kind of trees are in area 5? some of them still had a orangish and sometimes yellow/brown fruit looking thing on them. hard shelled, and the trees were usually covered in some good moss. definitely not oak trees.
