Has anybody got some first-hand experience in the shotgun areas of CR or FHL since the lead ban? Have the number of shotgunners decreased? What about the rifle areas? How about compliance, are they checking in the field or at registration, or?
The family and I are headed that way this afternoon. We'll mainly be hunting some pre-scouted spots in the shotgun area.

The lead ban is only for centerfire rifles right now.

The lead ban includes all rifle/shotgun/muzzleloaders. Not just rifles and not just for big game. No lead for coyotes, bobcats, etc...

I heard that HH found some Heavyshot fosters, but I found a custom manufacturer that made me some rifled-quasi-sabot non-lead rounds specifically for smooth bores. They were bucks. When they're gone, I'll go for the the ones that HH found.

Federal has some with Barnes all copper sabots and Remington also has some
with all copper bullets and there is also some loads with bullets made from heavyshot
metal but I can't remember the brand right now. The is ammo available for our slug guns.

I just bought some Remington Premier Copper Solids from Bass Pro in Rancho just for that reason.

You are talking of the FHL only? The condor regs don't go into effect until mid 2008 I believe.

CR and FHL both went to non-lead ammunition because of the proposed non-lead bill in the works. This was preemptive on their part.

And yes you have to use non-lead ammo for Shotgun slugs, Muzzleloader bullets, and any centerfire rifle. Bird hunters won't be affected until the 2008 hunting season, so they can still shoot lead at quail and dove.

Just to make clear... the lead ban for ALL firearms (ML, Shotgun, Rifle, etc) is limited to specific military installations (FHL, Camp Roberts) and Tejon Ranch at this time.

The CA lead ban should come into effect with the 2008 regulations, and will extend only to centerfire rifle when used for hunting big game and coyotes. It does not include rimfires or varmint rounds, nor will it apply to bird hunters (except waterfowlers, of course).

Well to answer my own question, just in case anyone else was interested...
CR had the fewest hunters I've seen yet. The shotgun area had only two groups hunting, other than us (at least that's what I saw). The range was going day and night with live fire. I believe only one pig was taken, way in the back of area 2. There was very little fresh sign. We saw a lone pig while driving mid-day through area 3, but couldn't catch up to it. The boys also saw another lone pig at rivers edge, man those pigs are fast...
Anyway, no one checked, or even asked about our ammo. Maybe they only check when you bring one in, I don't know.

If it was me, they'd only check when I forgot and brought in a magazine full of lead.

I'm hardly ever checked for steel when I go duck hunting either, but the possibility is always there.

Hasn't rained much down there yet, has it Blastmaster? Wonder if the pigs will come out when the ground gets good and wet.
