I am in the early stages of planning a trip to Colorado in November
for the late combo season. I am going with someone who says that
the deer hunting is pretty good, the elk hunting not quite as good.
Does anyone here have any experience there? I am not sure if I want
to buy an elk tag unless I think I have at least a pretty decent chance
at a bull. Any info about hunting this area would be appreciated.

TIA

Hit the CDNR Website, and look at the Harvest statistics for the season that corelates with the time you'll be there. They have the statistics narrowed down to the seasons, archery, public land vs. private and everything, pretty detailed info. Good Luck. I am heading to Area 33 for an archery hunt myself.

There are quite a few elk in that unit. I don't know where you are planning on hunting but most of it has decent bulls in it. There is going to be a lot of drilling activity in that unit for the next few years and who knows what that will do to them. We have hunted Pinto Mesa and done well, also hunter creek, Black Sulphur creek. Ryan Draw. Some good bucks in there too. Expect lots of company in there with you. good luck

Taos,
I hadn't seen you on in months, thought maybe you'd bailed for another site!!! Good to see you back in here. Know any good recent info on WMU 33 as far as this fall's upcoming Archery season???

You gave me some info back in Oct. And I am just about to finalize plans, looking at heading out and being there waking up in Elk Country the morning of the opener of archery season.

I have hunted that unit a couple of times during 3rd. season. Last year I never saw an elk in the entire unit. The area is a winter feeding area for deer and elk, so if you have some weather it's great. I've seen some real nice deer taken from this unit.
