This one charged me 12 years ago up near Clear Lake. I made a bad 200 yard shot with my .270, basically hit it in the back leg and sheared it in half. As me and my buddy approached it, it was watching us and then sprinted at us from about 75 yards away. It ran very fast even with only 3 good legs. I left my .357 in the truck, and only had 4 bullets left in my rifle. I unloaded on it as it approached, and it keeled over 5 feet in front of me. All five bullets hit the boar, but none of them hit the vitals. My buddy had his .357 and was shooting at it as well. I saw one .357 bullet hit the boar in the head and graze off its skull. We did not expect to see the pig where we did, and we rushed to get on it. Things went south very quickly. The whole experience was eye opening. Now I try to be a bit calmer and take my time when shooting hogs. This one was about 275 lbs. on the hoof.

I am new to hog hunting. I watched this video for shot placement on a hog. http://lonestarboars.com/threads/where-to-shoot-hogs-for-a-clean-kill.2/
I use a 223 and most of my shots are 50 yards or under. I have hit the target (from the video) or have been an inch or so off and each hog has gone down immediately on the spot and then starts kicking. I approach with gun pointed at the hog and will then use my 9mm to finish it off, every time. I use Barnes VOR-TX 55 GR TSX FB ammo. Many say the 223 is to small, it might be at a longer range, but it has been perfect for the way I have been hunting hogs. Here is a video that I made that captured a kill shot from me on my trail cam.

When I was 12 or 13 I hit my first pig with a lung shot from my junior compound bow maybe had a draw weight of 45 max. So I nail this thing and I'm super excited. It takes off to the left and then runs back and around a large bush... and then comes straight for me. My initial excitement quickly turns into umm uh oh my bow is pretty garbage right about now maybe should of had a gun instead. LOL. Anyways I turned straight right and ran up a steep embankment to get out of it's way.

I don't really know if that was really a true charge or the pig just running for it's life and there I was where it was going. Anyways made for a memorable first big game animal for a kid at the time. Miss it thinking back on it. Haven't really been seriously pig or deer hunting in a long time. I wanted to do deer this year but a stupid family problems ate up my time and energy.

The vid I posted the other day has a crazy charge in it. The guy just grabs the pig and lays it down on its side like a cowboy. Crazy stuff to watch.

Just make sure to bring your muleta! If you don't you could improvise and use your backpack.

I have had to finish off 2 hogs at about 10'. The first one was a 125 pound sow that I had hit a little bit too far back. When I went to find her she charged out of a brush pile on a dead run right at me. I managed to stop her with a 7mm-08. A little interesting for a few seconds.
A 200 pound boar that my son had shot (30-06) came down a canyon right at me but I don't think it was charging. I was just on a trail it was using. We were quail hunting and pig hunting on the same day. He had the only rifle. I had a 20 gauge auto with slugs. The slug worked great at about 10 feet. Fortunately I could hear it coming. That boar was also hit a little too far back for a quick kill.

Question to you experienced pig hunters:

If you're using a .223 Rem, do you have to shoot them in only certain areas?

If using .30-30 Win or .308 Win you can just do a typical lung-shot type of deal right?

I have no experience with anything smaller than a 7mm-08 on hogs. I can say that our most common mistake is hitting slightly too far back. I think on hogs you need to move up really right on the shoulder. On deer I always aim right behind the shoulder and don't have any issue. (assuming the bullet goes where I think it should)

Hmmph... Had to Google "muleta". Now I know. Interesting.

Maybe 20 years ago i was ready to use my pack. A wild bull was between me and camp, he never did charge but i was ready.
And yes it was wild, C-4 has a population of wild cattle that were abandoned in the wilderness long ago.

Maybe 10 or so years ago I was riding my mountain bike at night in the coastal mountains (double track trail). I was off my bike because my buddy got a phone call. While he was talking on the phone i hear movement getting closer from behind and to the side of us. Then I hear low guttural grunting, my bud hears it to and we locked eyes for a second as he stashes his phone, mounted his bike and was off riding up the hill in one smooth motion. I was not so graceful, my shorts hooked on my seat and stopped my leg from going over the bar, I tried forcing through it but had to back my leg all the way off to get unhooked. I finally got on the bike and started up the hill after my bud.
It was a black night so we never did see that scary ass critter but i'm sure it was a either hog or the blair witch... or it could have been a hog possessed by the blair witch.

I am firmly of the belief that hog hunting with a .223 is just wrong unless you're EXTREMELY proficient and KNOW you can hit them in the head with a kill shot on your first try. Otherwise it's just too little of a gun, particularly on a big male hog. I've found .223 bullets in hogs that i've killed that didn't make it thru the shield and rib cage.

There are plenty of mainstream high powered rifles (270, 308, 7mm, 30-06) that carry plenty of punch to drop a hog with a decent shot to the boiler room. I would NOT put a 30-30 into that category as 30-30's have far less kinetic energy than the others I noted (for a comparison see here:https://www.swggun.org/30-30-vs-30-06/) and lose their power quickly with distance. I've hit hogs broadside with 150 grain rounds, heard the bullet slap into the shield, and watched them run away. That NEVER has happened with an -06. With that said, I've killed plenty of hogs with a 30-30... but a lot more needed a follow-up than those i've hit with more powerful rounds.

Hogs aren't bulletproof, but they can be tough SOB's so better to go prepared.
