Trying to plan first (and likely only) African Plains Game hunt-OVERWHELMING! They all seem the same on the websites-Good or bad personal experiences would be appreciated.
Larryf – A great place to start is your local SCI Chapter. SCI is a great place to find some great guides.
I hunted with Phillip Bronkhorst. He as a great place but he is a little on pricey side, but he will defiantly take care of you. Watch out for the cheap hunts. The last thing you want to do is pay $2000 in airfare and shoot below average animals to save a couple of hundred $.
Larryf,
As bpnclark said, check out the SCI website and you can read reviews of outfitters from members. Some will give you costs and detailed info on the hunt.Just be sure and do some research on the outfitter, before booking your hunt.Watch out for the cheap brokered out hunts,go with someone that handles all the paperwork themselves(personally)and will pick you up at the airport themselves. We had to wait in the SA police station for almost two hours because four guys in front of us didn't have the proper paperwork with them(because of broker). We went through in fifteen minutes....
I don't know where you live, but this week is the ISE show in Sacramento,Ca. and I will be there working with my SA outfitter buddy.Stop by and get some really good info on SA hunts...The name is Shingani Safari,we'll be there all weekend...Good Luck and have fun....
............Ron...
Thanks for suggestion-I'm in Virginia so the Sacramento meeting won't work. Do the hair coats on African animals vary with the seasons as much as North American game? By brokers do you mean folks in the U.S. that book for some of these outfits? Are you suggesting that I need to avoid the ones that have a U.S. phone number in the contacts? Thanks
Larryf,
There are broker outfitts that just book hunts from multiple outfitters and they get a kickback or fee for doing so.I'm not saying this is a bad thing, just be careful when searching for hunts this way.Check SCI's website and do a outfitter search, members write in about their hunts and outfitters and SCI keeps these for people to check out.It gives reviews from the the members and even costs on some.During my trip there were guys in line that didn't have the proper paperwork with them and their booking agent was in the states(10 hr time difference). They were stuck and I don't know what ever happened to them. You are going to spend alot of hard earned money, time and hours flying to make this trip happen. So,don't hesitate to ask alot of questions.....References....new and old.Talk to the outfitter himself,he should respect that you maybe spending your money with him...
If you have any questions feel free to ask, this is a great website with a bunch of good guys and they will help you have a great hunt.
I'm not sure about the coats of the animals changing,I think that would be area specific. But they don't get as big of a temp change like we do here in the states. Some animals coats get beatup from rutting certains times of the year...
Larryf – Be sure to find out which animals you really want to hunt for before shopping around (especially if you plan on taking only one trip to Africa). If you know which animals you want, you might be better off just paying day rates instead of “package” hunts. If you just want a Kudu, Impala, Warthog, Wildebeest, Blesbok, you can find some great package hunts from a lot of PHs/Outfitters.
If you start to see some strange names and want to put a picture with the name, take a look at my website.
Just a note that may (or may not) help. I believe somewhere in this Africa Forum, JJHack did a pretty good write-up on some things to consider when you're planning an Africa hunt. He's got a lot of experience in the field, and his write-up covered most of the critical considerations.
Other than that, as the other guys said... do your research. Call references. I don't know if there's any such thing as an unsuccessful African hunt, but anytime you can speak to someone who maybe didn't get quite what they were after (trophy Kudu or something), see what their thoughts are about the operation. Compare those to the successful hunters, and see what falls out in the middle.
