About mid June I'll be on my way to Goodfellow, Texas near San Angelo. I hope I can meet up with one of you great JHO'ers so I can get the scoop on how everything runs down there as far as hunting and what not. I'd love to do some Texas boar, deer and other hunting while I'm there. I.e. where to go and times.
I feel like I'm going blindfolded
<
into Texas right before deer season and that kinda worries me. I'd appreciate anyhelp you can send my way
<
, thanks.

Now I feel kinda like a leech...
<
always asking for help and all. If there is anyone I can help with Idaho hunting feel free to PM me. I'll do my best to help you out. (Elk, Deer, Coyotes...)

LeeChul,

Are you visiting Texas in June or are you moving here. If you are visiting, then there is not a whole lot of hunting to do other than hogs or exotics. Dove season opens in Sept and deer right after that on late Oct. I am by no means close to San Angelo. (About 10 hours away), but if you are willing to head a little further west I might be able to send you the names of some people that you could possibly hook up with.

Thanks,

I will be moving there for approximately five months, until the end of November. As I can see the Deer season is not centered on the fall but instead, on the spring. However I also do archery and I noticed there is a fall archery hunt, any info on this. Email me if you'd like.

I sent you an email with the email address of a guy in San Antonio who is very helpful, and could be a good source of info for you. I've hunted with him in Texas.

Lee you need to get a Texas public hunting hand book. Since you hunt with a bow check out Lake Amistad in Del Rio ,Texas(state park). I am not up to date on the area but it's (or was)bow hunting only, year round,no fee or small fee,day pass, with hogs and javelina. Also has coyotes, bobcats, mountain lion.....but I am not sure what the state will let you hunt. and it's probly only 2 0r 3 hours from San Angelo. Check with Texas parks and wildlife. If you want a guide ....let me know I can reconmend a good one that won't cost you a arm and leg.

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind. I'm not sure what you mean by what the State will let me hunt, but that area sounds good.

I believe that Lake Amistad is by draw hunt only. There are not any public lands in West Texas that allow walk in big game( whitetail, mule deer, etc.) hunting. Most of those are in East and Central Texas with a few in North Texas by a postcard draw. The only open public land in West Texas is Elephant Mountain WMA and Black Gap WMA. You can hunt dove, quail, and rabbits there on a walk in basis. They are closed on and off for draw hunters between Oct. and Jan.

Go to Texas Parks and Wildlife and you can get more exact information than we could probably give you here.

Don't take this reply as a statement that you won't be able to find anywhere to hunt. If you do your homework, there is a ton of places in Texas to hunt. You just may have to drive a little farther than you used to. I for one am used to long drives for a good hunt. I live in the Houston so I know that unless I'm going dove, duck or goose hunting, I'm gonna have to make a minimum 5-6 hour drive. You may not get the trophy animals but good hunting can still be found. Like anywhere if you are looking for the big ones you will have to fork over the big bucks. No pun intended.

I would say if you are as serious about your hunting as you seem to be and you are going to be here for an extended period of time, then I would suggest that you get a daily public hunting permit for $15.00. They will send you a public lands map, and you can plan out a long weekend to go hunt another part of the state. There are lots of public hunt land in our area that allows no limit archery hog hunting for instance.

Let me know if you need anymore help.

bzzboy,

I have no clue what permit you are buying? My permit APH (Annual Pulic Land Hunting) was $48!!! Here is a link for a better description.

http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/hunt/public_hunting/

I would not recommend buying the permit until you determine where you want to hunt. Most of the land covered under this permit is for special access to private land and is only used during dove hunts. Give the local Parks and Wildlife office a call and explain your situation and see if they have any information for you.

Good luck!

Muddy, I was refering to the permit that is further down on the page that you posted the link to. I did mistate about the public land booklet. I was thinking of the APH on that one. I know that the APH is $48.00. I have one. I was just suggesting that he go the $15.00 route to get his feet wet and check out what is available.

Regular Permit Hunts
A $15 Daily Hunting Permit purchased at the hunting area is available for some of the small game hunts [youth under 17 free with permitted adult]. This information is found in the Applications for Drawings on Public Hunting Lands booklet.
Dove, quail, waterfowl, squirrel, and rabbit at designated times on designated Wildlife Management Areas.
Some hunts are youth only hunts where only supervised youth are allowed to hunt.
