.......if hunters are in decline (whatever the reason) then it's just a matter of time before we are over run by deer, lions, and/or pigs. Then everyone will be looking for a way to avoid having an unwanted hood ornament.
Little food for thought....In MI. there are so many deer that one Thanksgiving we saw 4 deer/car accidents over the weekend. (Of course we helped out by taking a few deer from the field using a little smaller weapon)
And close to home in Cali don't forget what happened this past deer rut, more reports from the media of crazed deer than I can recall in past years.
as hunters we do not attack, hurt or kill anti's to justify what we do and why we do it, but the anti's will attack, will hurt and kill us hunters to protect animals at any cost from being hunted and killed.
when it comes down to it they value the life of animals more than the life of humans, and thats scary!
thats why as hunters its just not how we step in the woods thats important, it how we step about society everyday too thats important, and thats the sad reallity when you have anti's all around you!
Guys,
There was a gobbler guillotine video floating around last year that got the same reaction and responses.
Please give me a minute on the soap box here as a gift for my 53rd birthday.
When I was young around 12 yrs old back around 1964-my friends and I used to sneak in to the slaughter house where the hogs were taken for processing.
Back then we used to rabbit hunt with our bows down at the riverfront and we had discussions about the ethics of one shot head shot kills versus ribcage shots that would pin the rabbit to the ground using field tips on sitting rabbits in the briars.
I'm a hunter and fisherman by nature and ex-marine by enlistment and sometimes the stuff on the outdoor channel and outdoor life network bothers me and I'm not afraid to admit it.
However, before I condemn anyones methods of take be it point blank over bait. or food plots, or at what I consider ridiculously long range or the fact that I believe that a larger caliber heavier bullet and better shot placement should have been used to cut down of the kicking and clouds of spewing blood and squeeling and screaming.
I have to honestly say that is hunting and that is what happens sometimes.
At least we have the second ammendment and many state constitutions that guarantee the right to hunt.
What we all need to do is to stick together and support each other short of poaching against the onslaught that has been waging against us and which I fear will once again raise it's ugly head with a vengence on the National level once the libs regain majority and the whitehouse.
I think a lot of this crap is going to come to a head hopefully with one more constitutionalist replacement on the new supreme court in the near future before W leaves office and I believe that states who infringe on the constitutional rights of it's citizens should and will be denied any and all federal funding. This will then need to be enforced on the state level right down to bogus rezoning and other anti use antics by counties and their municipalities.
Franklin3, yes I have converted at least 4 antihunters to our life style, one was a vegetarian and now is asking me to take her hunting, another is a 9 yr old boy whose parents are terrified of guns and hunting finally after about 3 yrs of gentle prodding and info came to me and said it's ok if you take our son hunting, they even bought him a pellet gun and had me instruct him, so don't give up yet . Graffic blood and gore is unapealling to many hunters not just anti's, I've been up to my shoulders inside deer and elk many times but I sometimes cringe when its too graffic on TV or a video.
It is true that the numbers of hunters are currently dwindling. I believe that this may be about to change. Hunting shows only started booming within the last few years on cable and sattelite TV. Internet hunting sites are still growing. There are people that stumble across these shows and sites that have never even thought about hunting in the past. You may begin to see a very sudden and large increase in the numbers of hunters soon. Be careful what you wish for.
Cool video. I think the second hog was shot a little to far behind though. I would have anchored it with another shot. I've seen them get up and take off before on a seemingly take down shot. I raised hogs for slaughter as part of my FFA project in high school and they don't die easy or willingly.
Thanks dirtpoor,
Nice work on helping kids into the lifestyle. I have my grandsons freinds always asking if I would bring them along hunting. I have met with their parents on occasioin and as of yet the best we have acccomplished is to get a couple of them down to the rifle range for a fun day of shooting. And I did get a dad and his son to join me at Birds and Boars for a day of Quail hunting and BBQ after which the boy told his dad "This is more fun than fishing" The boy is a fishing fanatic. Everyday out trolling local waters in his custom zodiac. he's gotten several of his freinds into fishing and they line up like a fleet and troll. We call them Davies Navy and there lethal on the water. There really is nothing like the beaming face of a young person experiencing the excitement of the the great outdoors.
We need to remember that times have changed and the days of stopping by the slaughterhouse or watching the slaughter of hos and steers in the feild are no longer commonplace events. Everyone keeps their firearms under lock and key instead of loaded over the front door or in the closet.
You guys have all raised legitimate concerns about our image and if you knew me personally you'd know that I really am sensitive to it.
I felt the need to get people here to engage in lively debate. and if evryone agree's on everything there really can be no debate. It is difference of opinion that makes a horse race. one point of view alone makes for dull conversation. Uncle Ji started a thread here that opened into a very interesting topic. Look at the time it has been posted and the number of responses and you find it may be the liveliest discussion on the boards.
I never posted my thoughts about the video itself until now.
As a hunter I think both were clean kills and the first hog never felt a thing. The second hog although appeared to be in pain was simply exhibiting the reflex response and was dead before he stopped moving.
Personally I do not think that posting the final moments of death enhances a hunting video at all in fact it detracts from it in my opinion. The spot and stalk are the thrilling part of the hunt. Show the killing shot ok but no one needs to watch the death thro. When we make a killng shot on an animal regardless of it's species I can say there is one common thing among all species and that is life does not go quetly from the body all the time. I have seen the smallest of mammals fighting for life when death is beyond certain and there is no hope of escape yet they refuse to die. It is the kind of kill that that the anti hunters breed from and wins the PR fight for them so often. The kind of kill that we try to avoid through diligent shooting practice and ethical shot choices.
Let's all agree that we can unite behind the principles that have been discussed here on JHO and stated so eloquently by some of our fellow JHO members. Or we might wake up some morning and find ourselves extinct.
Thanks to all.
Now I gotta sit back and try to pass a g*da*m kidney stone!!!!!!!!!!!!
