The road in from Idria is in great shape. A friend met me at spanish lake 2 weekends ago. His truck wasn't running so he drove his old dodge dart! I even have pictures.

Gees! I take a day off from checking this post and look what happeneds!! I'm excited there is so much interest in pulling this off! Bubba, I'm glad I'll get the chance to hunt with you again so soon after Los Podres.
So is it safe to say we have a go for the weekend of May 25th - 26th Pig Valley @ Clear Creek the New Idria side?
How about a show of who is planning to make it so far? Oh and let me say, if we can convince Bubba to prepare his delicious Arancherra, it will be worth the drive regardless of the hunt!!
Is there a meeting place we can hook up at prior to heading in? Regardless of the valiant Dodge Dart story, I doubt my old VW convertible will fair as well, and I might want to jump a ride in with someone. Ask Bubba how ridiculous I looked bouncing up and down the mountain at Los Podres when the JHP crowd when turkey hunting a few weeks back!!
The only problem I can see with that weekend is it's Memorial day weekend. There will probably be a lot more dirt bike riders there. Usually they stay on the other side, but you never know.
here are a couple of pictures of pig valley taken from the road above new idria. the town is to the left just out of the picture and the valley that Bowhunting fool was talking about is to the right out of the picture. It would be a H&^L of a hike down into the valey but probably worth it if you are up to it. I might try to go down there scouting on May 4 and 5 if I get a chance.

How does everyone feel about doing this over memorial weekend? Do you think it will be crowded? And for you guys with family, will it be harder to take off on that weekend? We could always push it one week in either direction, my schedule is wide open so I will leave it up to the crowd.
I'm willing to give it a try that weekend, you never know. I don't really think there will be a lot of dirt bikers over on that side. Actually, any weekend is good for me, I only live about 2 hours away and I know my way around there, been going for 28 years, mostly as a bike rider but recently as a hunter.

I can puch forward but not backwards. Yes, I can bring some Arancherra. Bigbubba Daddy, I was surprised you were able to make that wrong left turn down the mountain and make it back up. If you want, you can stop by my house on the way up if our schedules don't clash. I live on the way in Los Banos. Its about 45 minutes to an hour from my house. I wont make it up there until late friday or early saturday morning. Going to a graduation Friday morning.
If you're thinking of going that May 4 weekend I may be able to head up there that Friday-Sun. Not sure how to get to New Idria yet. Yahoo maps just says: "Unnamed road"
I'm definitely in. You guys do have a point about the holiday weekend. The following weekend will work for me as well. I'll be leaving early friday to beat the LA traffic.
It seems like we can decide on either the May 25th weekend or June 1st.
Rocketman, I'm not able to get that link. It says error.
From down south, you'll come up I-5 to Panoche Rd, and head West (into the hills). The road turns to dirt (or last time I used it, it did) pretty soon after you leave the freeway, but don't worry. You'll come to a backwards fork in the road where you'll want to hook back to the Left, onto New Idria Rd. If you cross Little Panoche Rd, or start seeing signs for Mercy Hot Springs, you missed the turn. If you keep on, you'll end up near Hollister. Lots of pigs, but it's all private.
Once you're on New Idria Rd, you can't go but one way... however it is a long, winding drive. The road narrows down and gets real bumpy along the way.
Rocketman, I saw the pix, and that is the area I thought it was. Just before you get there you should see a couple of good open meadows where you guys can make a group camp. If you're scouting next weekend, you'll probably see what I'm talking about.
Not sure if I'll be there or not... I'll probably wing it right up to the last minute. Sounds like fun, though.
I am going to try to make it to the hunt but I may hike that area early May. Below is some information that may help you with finding the place and planning for the hunt.
Based upon Bowhunting Fool's description under (Boar hunting Panoche Hills) and Rocketman's pictures from (this topic) I believe I have ID'd the spot. Use the web address below to bring up a 1:25,000 topo map. Notice the location of a red colored marker (in the shape of a cross) beneath the word: Mine. This cross marks Pig Valley. (Alternatively: at http://www.topozone.com click on UTM coords, and type in this appropriate values: UTM Zone: 10 Easting: 709224 Northing: 4031691. Click on 1:25,000 to see a detailed map)
The creek (running north-south) just to the West of the marker would be the western boundary of Pig Valley. The eastern boundary is much less steep because of the spread between the contour lines.
Rocketman's close-up picture reveals the portion of the road that is just to the north of the jeep trail - road intersection. To find this on the map, notice a jeep trail (single-dashed line) that intersects a double-dashed line (road). The e in the word Mine marks this location. The portion of the road that angles northwest from this point is the road visible in Rocketman's close-up picture.
Beer it is!! It looks like we have another possible member joining us.
Dogtrainer, hope you can make it!
What firearm are you all taking? I haven't been on that side of Clear Creek. Will the trusty 30-30 work? Or shall I try out the .243 with 100 with corelokt?
I like to make things really hard for myself so I will be carring a 55# old recurve bow with fir shafts and two blade magnus broadheads. Oh and probably my old trusty 1911 just incase I only piss one of em off!!!
I've got a question about getting there. How's Panoche Rd from HWY 25 to New Idria Rd? That lookes like the most direct route for me (coming from San Jose), but I could also take HWY 152 to I-5 and come down that way if the roads are better.
