Did you by chance have a GPS with you? I'm trying to figure out where the cabin may be. I found a real crude map showing the BLM land boundry along the eastern side of Idria. The spot marked "Mine" on the 2900 foot contour just SE of the town is shown as private property. Maybe pig valley is just over the ridge to the NE from "Mine", on the topo there is a creek running thru the canyon and that area is BLM land.
I won't be able to make the June 1 hunt, daughter's 13th birthday that weekend. I have a few extra days off before Memorial day weekend and was thinking of going then, if anyone wants to join, let me know.
BTW, if anyone wants a copy of the map email me. Like I said it's real crude and fuzzy but you can figure out where the town is by usin the shape of the grids on the topo.

Rocketman,

After leaving the collapsed structure, I began to walk east on the Jeep Trail that begins near the letter e from the word Mine (yes, the word mine is about on the 2900-foot contour line).  After walking about 120 yards I looked to the southwest and on the hillside I noticed a whitish object and a very large reflection of sunlight off of glass.  At the time I thought it was a car.  But now I think it is the Miner's cabin.  I estimate its location to be about 350 yards south of the letter n of the word Mine.

I do not have GPS.  I use map, compass, feature identification, and triangulation to navigate.

It's good to talk to someone who's been there, done that. I was there a week ago and tried to drive out the road(trail) that goes by the east side of the lake. Didn't get very far, no one had been down there in a long time. Tried to come in on the San Carlos Peak trail and didn't get past the peak itself. It looks on my map like the area you are describing is not BLM land. Maybe we can go again over Memorial day weekend and see what we can find.

I see you guys are working towards May 25.  Anyone looking at June 29/30 by chance?  I will be in the area.  I assume the area your hunting is public and all of you feel your chances are pretty good at seeing some pigs.  I have bow hunted many years but never for pig.  I always thought public access pig hunting was marginal at best.

Let me know if the date slides/re-scheduled or if anyone is interested in June 29/30.

I would appreciate it.

I am coming from Minnesota and will only be available June 29/30.  I was hoping your dates would slip for some reason and I would be extremely lucky that they fell on June 29/30.  I thought I would take the opportunity to put myself out their in the event someone wants to get together that weekend.  I am also looking into a guide but they are all so expensive!

I posted a scan of the Idria topo with the BLM land boundries drawn on it from the BLM website. You can download it and open it with a picture viewer to see it better (it's big,700K for you dial up guys). Looks to me the pig valley area is private.

Jen,

The most reasonable priced hog hunt I know of is Frank Morasci, (831) 385-5628.  $375 is the total price for two days or until you get your hog, no extra charges (a lot of places charge extra trophy fees for big boars).  If you want your meat cut and wrapped you can get it done the same day for another $50.  You'd be hard pressed to find a cheaper guided big game hunt anywhere.  Plus Frank is a good guy to spend a day hunting with.  But I don't know if Frank guides during the week though, as he has another day job.

First off, welcome to the board Jen. Lots of good people on this board. There have been a lot of hunts organized here, and I wouldn't be surprised if a group can be put together for the dates you mention.

There are hogs on public land, but it's a tough gig, as you probably know. Referring to shooter44's post, $375 is a good price for a two-day guide. That's still a bit steep for me right now, and I can imagine that if you're flying out the expenses can pile up.

As for this upcoming hunt, I wringed my ankle and seeing that the terrain is pretty steep I'm gonna need to opt out of this get-together. It does sound like a good area to find some hogs. I'm not sure about Jun 29-30, but feel free to start a separate thread here to see if there's interest.

Once again, welcome to Jesse's forum.

Regarding Pig Valley, I posted this message (privately) to Rocketman but thought that it would be of interest to others hunting-exploring Pig Valley.

I will not be able to make it out to Clear Creek as I have used up my trips to the area, at least for a while.  I do think that I have found the Miner's cabin and all that is left is a concrete foundation with six-inch pieces of railroad track sticking out.  There is a few pieces of rusted pipe a weathered window frame (no glass), and a few railroad ties.  There is a strong sulfur smell and the creek is only a few yards away.  Nearby there is also a small cave.  Although the cabin is gone, the area offers a good camping spot because it is close to the creek and the air is cooler.

You can see the general area from the lake.  Walk to the structure that is at the rear of the lake (Idira reservoir).  Using binoculars (if you have them) look north down Pig Valley about 400 yards or until you see a bare gray colored bank of gravel-rock.  This bare area will form the west bank of the creek.  The top of that bank holds the foundation of the Miner's Cabin.

So, what kind of headcount do ya'll have for this hunt?

It looks like I may be in the general vicinity on the weekend after all, and might come crash the party on Saturday night.

As I said, I believe I'll be there for at least for Saturday night around the camp fire... and possibly for whatever hunting happens on Sunday morning.

BigDog is out hunting in Sonoma right now, but I'm pretty sure he's a definite for the weekend.  Maybe he'll chime in later.

Welcome to Jesse's BowMeister!

I'm not the organizer here, but I don't think anyone would have a problem with another member to the party.  The more, the merrier and all that, right?  If there are too many hunters, we can sure spread out... the Clear Creek area is pretty big!

I'm 50-50 right now.  Maybe stopping by fora visit.  Since my Tejon hunt is the next weekend, not sure if I can do a full hunt this weekend.  Like Phillip said, maybe I'll stop by for a look at your hogs hanging.  Good luck if I can't make it.

I just checked my freezer and I think I still have room for one more pig. So, yes, I will be there this weekend.

Have you guys come to a consensus of where we are going to camp? I am stuck driving a two wheel drive, so if it is real rough out there, I may need to ride with someone.

Dave

Hello????? Is anybody out there???

How about a head count on this gathering? Or is everybody bailing on it?

Dave

ClickDog,

Unless it storms again (unlikely) on Friday or Saturday, your truck should handle any of the roads.  There are a couple of spots where I like to use 4wd just for added traction instead of riding the brakes, but that's minimal.

I figure that, since I'll be rolling through later, I'll just look for a group of vehicles and JHP stickers.  You all have one, right?

So is the threat of a little heat scaring everybody off, or what?  This thread went to two pages, and suddenly there are only two definites (BBDaddy and friend) and two "possibles" (myself and Bubba).  Where's everyone else?

Shaggy?  You gonna make it?  Rocketman?

Sing out, fellas!

I kind of switched gears because I got a chance to hunt some property in Monterey on the 7th.  I still want to give it a chance someday.  But its a long haul for me so I took the ranch opportunity this year.
