How does the DFG feel about hunting with the AR in California? Anyone hunt with AR platform and had contact?

I hunt pigs and coyotes with mine fairly regularly. If it's legally configured, why not? It's a legal center fire rifle, who gives a darn what DFG opinion's are; whether they like it or not it's legal to use.

I have yet to have any run-ins with fish and game or other LEO's while in the field. But I do shoot it at a couple different ranges that frequented by LEO's and haven't had any problems.

I've thought about this too and have wondered if a warden saw you walk out of the woods carrying one their first thought might be that you are guarding a pot grow or something.

Ive seen people hunting with AR's for coyote's.

I hunted pigs with a friend that was using an AR10 (.308). It was nice he was able to make multiple shots quickly. (I didn't say good shots) but follow up was quick. We were on a guided hunt and he shot 2 hogs with barnes tsx copper and both were recovered quickly, very little tracking.

Here in Nevada, a lot of guys hunt yotes on a AR platform. I do it as well and it's a lot of fun gettin those quick follow-up shots. I really don't hunt anything except yotes with my Rock River AR15.

I use 223 and built a 6.8 SPC, the 6.8 is impressive.:hog chewing:Work good on hogs.

I just spent two days hunting with a buddy carring a Reaper 308. Was hoping to see him use it, but the hogs didn't cooperate. Beautiful gun, but heavy after a couple thousand feet of climbing.

I thought I read something somehwere that stated "you can not hunt with a riffle that holds more than 3 or 4 rounds of ammunition."
Anyone know or heard of this law? Is it a CA law?

The only restriction is shotguns can only carry 3 rounds while hunting. No restriction on rifle magazines as long as they are acceptable as a method of take and legal in California/Fed.

Rounds in the magazine and rattling deer? \
Question: Could you help me with two questions regarding deer hunting here in California? First, is there any restriction on the number of rounds a magazine can hold, or on how many rounds you have in it? I want to hunt with an SKS rifle (it is quite accurate), but it has a ten round magazine. I would probably only put three rounds in when hunting. Also, is it legal to use shed antlers as rattling “lures”? If so, if I shot a deer I would then be in possession of an extra set of antlers, so it got me wondering. (Mark)
Answer: As long as the rifle you’re using meets the specifications for method of take in the regulations, and the magazine you’re using is legal for the public to possess and is not modified to carry larger loads, then it is legal to use with the capacity available. Shed antlers are not prohibited to possess and may be used to “rattle” deer.
