Are pigs more active while its raining ?

Planning to go to FHL again tomorrow. Im taking my 12yr old daughter.:smiley-mouse: This wiLL be her first time goin with me on a hunting trip. Was wondering if it would be a waste of time to head out their in the a.m. since the forecast says it wiLL be raining starting tonite and pretty much aLL day tomorrow...

They don't like to be out in the rain any more than you do. But when the weather breaks, your chances of seeing them are as good as any time.

mornings and when the rain brakes to a light drizzle or mist is probably the BEST time. If you arnt concerned about getting wet i would go and wait for the breaks...when is the best time for a fat kid to go outside? when its cool and no direct sun! the worst that happens is you dont see anything but you get to be in the field with your kid.

I will be more concern about the road condition at FHL when raining. but If you got good 4x4 go for it.. Rain or no rain, pig love soft and wet grounds.ig-laughing:

Pigs are rooting animals, as such, it's soooooooo much easier to root in soft wet ground than hard dry ground. So yes, the rain helps, but they still prefer to be primarily nocturnal. What you will/should find are areas that look like someone went through it with a tiller; if so, you'll know there around. So try to get between their feeding areas and their bedding areas, hoping to catch one or more late at getting to the bedding area(s).

The rainy season provides the public lands with almost equal feed and water compared to the private lands. The acorn crop is on the ground now and the hogs are more opt to migrate away from their regular feed and watering holes. Rooting sign becomes more prevelant and the odds increase for the public land hunter this time of year.

Exactomundo, Well put! But why let the chicken of of the coop? Sometimes experience learned by doing it your self. You're not going to learn by sitting on the couch.

IMHO, right after a rain at this time of the year is the best... But regardless of timing, like some say, ya can't shoot em from your couch.

I enjoy hunting in bad weather on public land. It just seems quieter and more peaceful out there. A few less people for sure.

Plus, sometimes the skies open up and you get great scenery.

This weekend was bad weather all around in NorCal...but not in this picture, at least for a bit.

Yesterday was the first time I've ever seen a pig on public land, the most tracks I've ever seen on public land, and the fewest hunters I've ever seen out period. As soon as the rain stopped the pigs came out. We never got a shot, and got no pics, but it was well worth it to get out and get a little(lot) wet.

4x4 is a must. Stonyford was impossible to even walk around honestly. Slicker than snot on the roads walking. All gates were closed, so we hiked quite a few miles to see what we saw.

Everyone hit the nail on the head here. The best time would be right after the rain stop or is a lite drizzle only. As a matter of fact, I shot my first pig right after a big rain. The second it stopped, my gun went off and down went a pig. After gutting the pig, the rain picked up again really hard. So, like everyone said, if you are not afraid of getting wet, just go and do it. Good luck to you and your daughter.

I went out Sunday to hang cameras for a Turkey day pig hunt this weekend and there was fresh pig sign everywhere.
If they dont like being int he rain they sure come out as soon as it stops...

thanks for all the advice fellas... had a blast this weekend with my daughter. Didnt see much other than a few fresh sign... their was other hunters in that area so i didnt want to interfere with their area. Was in TA 11 all weekend. Saw the biggest mountain lion ive ever seen in TA 11. It was about 600 yrds away and thru my binocs it looked huge still... The roads were very muddy but nothin the 4x4 couldnt handle (in some sections)... The river crossing was up to about the door on sunday morning after all that rain. Could only cross in one area in to TA 11... It was a great trip with my daughter...!!!
