Glass Eye,

I thought they charged your card when you apply and then pay you back after the drawings if you're not drawn. Is that not how it works?

No, they charge you an application fee and for your hunting license. They charge you for the tag only if you draw.

JJ you might as well put in for deer and sheep later since your buying a license.

I've drawn 3 archery bull elk tags in 13 years of applying......the key to drawing (at least for archery) is putting in for zones that aren't as popular. Spend the money and buy the upgraded statistics book and understand it fully. Also keep in mind that EVERY elk unit in AZ can produce 350" bulls, which beyond popular belief is a BIG bull. If you're willing to arrow a bull in the 320" range, you'll have a fun hunt more often than others who search for the elusive 400" bull. JMO

. Since I'm 99.9% (probably closer to 110%) sure that I can't be drawn for a hunt this year, I just went with the cheaper point for $7.50.[/b]
Bonus points are NOT preference points, it's possible to draw a premium tag with NO bonus points.
Also, you didn't save any money buying the bonus point only, if you had applied for a hunt it still would have only cost $7.50, unless you actually draw a tag, then they take the tag fee from your credit card.

JJ is right w/ his assumption that he couldn't have drawn a tag in most of the popular units.

Due to recent policy changes, it IS impossible for a nonresident w/ 0 pts to draw a tag in these units. Say a unit has 100 tags, for example. 10 of those are going to non res and 20 are going to those w/ the highest number of points who applied for that hunt. It's pretty much guaranteed that 10 of those w/ the highest # of points are gonna be non-res, hence all of those NR tags are gonna go to those w/ the highest # of points.

It's a good system because it guarantees that if you put in long enough you will draw a tag. Only thing I dont agree w/ is hunters having to buy a license to participate in the drawing. This precludes a huge % of the application pool strictly due to financial reasons; not a sound decision IMO. This makes hunting in AZ only an option for those individiuals wealthy enough to invest in a tag that will eventually cost them thousands of dollars. It would be nice to see some quality 'trophy' hunts, that any hunter can afford.
