Alrighty then. I guess everyone's fingers are pointing at me now since I did asked what DP Canyon was. And no, I did not googled Dead Pig or Dill Pickle or Dog Poop etc....on the web. I just didn't realize I would be crawling up anyone's sleeves by asking. I'm just still looking for my first pig after 3 years of hunting. I'm sure whatever DP was, it would have been a big place and finding that particular "honey hole" of arrowslinger's would have been a long shot. Oh well![/b]

No worries Bret, never hurts to ask and LD's serious about offering up some locations if you ever head north.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div>
There's a reason hunters refer to places by "code names" like DP Canyon, Kokopelli Valley, or (one my favorites), the Triple Nipple Spot[/b]

I'll take credit for the Triple Nipple, but DP Canyon is all LD.

I agree 100% with this topic. I may be new to the forum but I know how hard it is to not only find a honey hole but also trying to keep it. Especially in this state where every year a new chunk of land is either taken away or closed off. Most guys have spent their hole lives researching and humping up and down hills to find the seceret spot. Shoot, I am even hesistant posting pics on this sight because I am afraid the background in Rvrsd or SanBrnd will give me away. Thanks, for the topic......

Like I said, I wouldn't care about giving away my honey hole. Heck, I've been going to upper cottonwood, pine flat and sequoia past squaw valley, and seen lots and lots of signs. Running into pigs is a whole different story. If anyone here wants to go...be my guess. Kill all the pigs and report it back here for me to see.

Is your name Steven? I believe I sent you 8 each of those KLM files? You should be in a good position to swap those honey holes one for one.

Mapmaker, if you are talking to me then the answer is no. I'm not Steven. I'm Bret, hence the name LOL.

Bret,

I've seen you hunt a couple times. Seemed like you need a little pig hunting lesson. Show me a spot with lots and lots of signs and I will show you a trick to find them. Sounds like a deal?

My goal in 2009 is to get Bret a hog on public land.

Not sure about you guys, but i'd be a bit offended if someone directed that comment towards me......(assuming that L2H and Bret don't know each other)

One other issue we need to deal with is some of the unfriendly posts that keep popping up. I'm getting more and more complaints about it. If someone asks for your secret spot you don't have to tell them. On the other hand you don't have to be flippant or rude to them either. A simple "I'd rather not say" is all you have to post. Some of the members here are kids or new hunters and they are LEARNING. We all go through that phase at one time or another. We had this same issue in the duck forum over some members pinning labels on the new folks and leading them on wild goose chases with misinformation. If you can't offer anything positive or helpful then just politely say you can't, leave out the nonsense. It'll lighten my email load and everyone will be happier here.

Looks like L2H is offering to help Brent on reading sign to me. What a concept huh, helping a newbie out?

Pig hunting lesson? LOL. Funniest thing I've heard this year. There is no lesson to be learned. Again, I rather be lucky on any given day than be great at hunting. You can be great all your life and not run into anything at all. L2H you saw me hunt at upper cottonwood a few times and yes, I did miss that pig at 80+ yards with iron sight only. I still blame myself because I couldn't calm myself down enough so I rushed my shot. Believe me, that doesn't happen too often. L2H, the places that I've seen numerous tracks and poop is at Pine Flat. You are more than welcome to go by there and try your luck any day of the week. If you should score one over there, than my hats off to you. Happy hunting!

I agree with Jesse's post above -- with one exception. I took the L2H post to be a rude comment just as AS did (whether L2H meant to be rude or not, I don't know). Certainly looks like Bret took offense to the comment, so it does not seem that this was two buddies ribbing each other.

Speck started this thread with a title about "etiquette" and some comments about newbies. L2H signed up 9, 2002; Bret signed up 7, 2008. I would say Bret qualifies as a newbie on JHO and deserves some welcoming responses. I have personally emailed Bret, and others, with some detailed info re Pine Flat, and I can tell by some of his posts that he sure as hell has put in the boot leather in the area to find plenty of sign, but no luck yet. I haven't scored there yet myself.

These public land spots are only believed to be secret by the handful of folks who talk to each other publicly in "code talk". They are not secret at all -- the only secret is about when the game happens to be using the spots in a big way. The public spots being discussed are well known to everyone who has been chasing the game a few years.

Talk about etiquette -- how polite is it if a few folks in a group discussion use code words so that other folks in the group are clearly left out of the conversation? Maybe folks should be a little more considerate of how they might appear to actually be excluding others in the group as they have what might be considered a private, yet public, discussion about enticing info? Yes, we all want to read about the adventures and they are entitled to use code to protect their spots, but when someone innocently asks for fine details, don't jump on them, just do as Jesse said and don't tell.

As far as a public land "honey hole" being ruined by public notice, that is only temporary -- the game moves out and people stop going to it, and the cycle starts all over again (Upper Cottonwood is a good example of this). So I disagree with the concept that I have some kind of responsibility to protect a spot for unknown "others" who already know about the spot. Of course, if someone told me about a good spot and asked me not to pass it on, I would absolutely respect that.

AS,

I personally have not met you and not yet seen how you hunt. Base on reading your success stories and other hunters' comments about you, you probably won't see any comments like the one I gave Bret. Like Jesse said, I'm just willing to share something on reading signs and tracking I know and have used it successfully. One example, you came across a warn out trail with fresh tracks of a big herd that came through in single file. When they are in single file, the trail is pretty obvious you can track them easily. The trail lead into a big canyon and all of sudden they spread out and all you see are rootings spread all over the canyon. Providing that the ground is wet and signs are easy to read. How do you continue to track them from there? How do you know which direction they went after they did all that rootings? Some long time pig hunters may already know the answer, but I believed not too many beginners knew about. I'm willing to share what I know but only for something in return.

By the way, I've only met Bret a few times, but I kinda have a feeling we may be related in some way.

My comment was not meant to be rude. And Bret don't take it as an insult. As you stated in your posts, you are still looking for your first pig. I've killed my fair share since 1985. I just feels that I could offer some assistance for you to bag your first. I've burned lots of boot leather in Upper Cottonwood and some points I just wanted to point out for you, I sat at high vantage points watching you and your buddies hike in the dark a couple times through some prime spots that I have spotted pigs at first light before. Now go figure where the pigs would be at first light. That should be one lesson for you to learn.

Of course being lucky is something everybody would rather be. Through out my hunting experiences I found that luck itself does not always come by very often. Same thing goes to good hunting skills. It's a team work of both lucks and good hunting skills together to maximize the success. With 20+ years of hunting experiences in my belt, I'm still all ears to anyone who's willing to teach me a new trick. So in my opinion there is always a lesson to be learn.

Just to put some numbers to the issue, Lake Somoma has over 440 hunters registered to hunt this year.

L2H, good to know you were only trying to help.....the original comment just seemed a little harsh, that was the reason for my comment. Hope you're able to help Bret get a hog out at the 'wood'.

I'm probably offender #1 on this......i use codes for all my spots, even with LD, we never refer to locations by their 'proper' names. I don't do it to exclude anyone, i do it to keep my spots 'secret' and always will. It's a public forum and the details are there for a long time and a simple seach function can bring up a whole lot of info. That's the reasoning behind it. When someone asks, i down play it and try not to offend anyone...but if they PM or EMail me, then i talk.
