Hi guys (& Jesse),

G'day from Australia!

(Jesse sent me an email today asking me to post the pic of the big boar on this website that I shot on the weekend - I previosly had it posted on the Australian hunting and the accurate reloading website forums.)

Anyway, I got this 100kg + boar on Saturday morning hunting (without dogs) in the canefields nearby (on the Fraser Coast, South East Queensland, Australia).

We heard the pig rooting in the cane and waited in ambush as it decided to come out. My Winchester .30/30 made short work of it 4 shots later! (The 'dirty thirty' is my favourite pig gun).

Large wild pigs like this are typical in Queensland and the Northern Territory and they do huge amounts of damage to stock and fields. They are vicious buggers and kill many dogs and sometimes do serious damage to hunters.

In Australia we call them 'Razorbacks' as the hair on their back stands up when they are agitated. This is the biggest pig that I have shot so I'm fairly happy this weekend!

Oh, bye the way if anyone is interested in hunting in Australia, checkout the great 'forum' section in the:

http://www.australianhunting.net

There are massive wild Water Buffalo in Australia as well and many of them are larger and more vicious than the African Cape Buffalo. In most cases its actually cheaper to hunt in Australia than it is in Africa as well. Plus, the aussie chicky babes are far better looking than the African mambas...lol

Theres a few more fairly good pics of the pig on this link to my brothers web site where the four pics are listed if anyone is interested:

http://homepage.mac.com/malpage3/PhotoAlbum12.html

P.S...As you can see I have a big beer belly...lol...hopefully Buffalo shooting in Arnhem Land next week will help work a bit of that off!!...lol

Ciao, Matt

If anyone is interested in a hunting safari in Australia I have listed some links to various guided hunts in Aus to give you a good cross-section of ideas:

1)Muckadilla Safaris (Queensland & Northern Territory). email: muckadilla@optusnet.com.au

2) John Clarks Guiding (Victoria). email: jrclark@start.com.au http://www.coralseasafaris.com

3) Outdoor Hunting Adventures (NSW & QLD). email: oha@idx.com.au http://www.homepage.idx.com.au/oha

4) Sambar Shikars Guiding (Victoria). email:errolmason@sambardeer.com

5) World Wide Hunts - Yeppoon Travel World. (QLD). email: rick@worldwidehunts.com.au http://www.worldwidehunts.com.au

6) World Class Wing Shooting Expeditions (Victoria). email:ianosa@bigpond.com

7) Australian Antlered Adventures (QLD). email: clarkanddebbie@hotmail.com http://www.australian-antlered-adventures.com

8) Davidsons Territory Safaris (NT). email: dassafaris@onaustralia.com.au

9) Queensland Action Guided Hunts (QLD). email: labbey@hotkey.net.au

10) Tropical Hunting Safaris (NT). http://www.tropicalsafaris.com.au

11) Also, I've heard many good reports about Matt Graham and his guiding & fishing trips (no! I'm not the same Matt!!) http://www.ausbowhunter.com.au/matt/

I have never used a guide (apart from my experiences in Africa) and have no idea about the quality of the above companies. The companies above advertise in our aussie shooting magazines, and there are many more that do not list internet contact information (so I have not included those).

Hope this is handy for anyone contemplating a hunting trip in Australia,

**Remember your best bet is to visit the FORUMS on http://www.australianhunting.net for the best info on the thrills of hunting in Australia.

Ciao, Matt

Welcome, Matt!  The JHP community is happy to have you.  That looks like a pretty decent hog you got yourself.

As an avid hog hunter myself, I have always wanted to go "down under" to see if I could scare me up some pork.  How easy is it for a nonresident to get the necessary permits, licenses, etc to 1. bring a weapon into Australia and 2. harvest a few hogs?

I would appreciate any input you might have for an unguided hunt.

G'day Rifleman,

Thanks for the welcome,

With regards to your questions:
"As an avid hog hunter myself, I have always wanted to go "down under" to see if I could scare me up some pork.  How easy is it for a nonresident to get the necessary permits, licenses, etc to 1. bring a weapon into Australia and 2. harvest a few hogs? ".

To tell you the truth I'm not totally sure! May I suggest that you visit http://www.australianhunting.net  forums and visit the big game or hunting sections and ask the same questions, as theres some really experienced guys/gals there that could tell you that straight away.

I really don't know the answers and I don't want to guess so that would be your best bet.

Sorry I can't be more of a help,

Ciao, Matt

Hi Matt, its me!!!!  Marty!!!  Jesse sent me a post too so I figured I'd come over and post a few pics.  But wouldnt you know it, some bastard has stolen my name already!  SOB.

Anyway.  Rifleman, getting your rifle in seems to be a pain in the butt.  It is possible, but a pain.  Seems Queensland is the easiest state to bring it in, which is fine because Queensland has the most pigs anyway.  Once you've got it in your right to hunt provided you have permission to hunt, which can also be a pain at times, but you can always find somewhere.

Anyway, here are a few more Aussie Hawgs.......(you may have seen them before)

Nice pics of some great hogs.  What is the animal that looks like some sort of dog?  Also what type of weapon is that the looks like some type of break action big bore, the one with no scope?

Hey mates, these are some great pictures!! Let me take this opportunity to welcome you guys to this page, you have found the "best" hunting page on the net with a whole bunch of nice people.  Nice tuskers you guys have shown us here.
I have the same question as SDHNTR, what is that animal that looks like a puppy? (the little one)

Thanks for dropping by Marty and Scoprio and posting those pics. It's always interesting to read and see the hunts down under. I've been wanting to get down there for a visit for many years and hope to get off my butt and do it here soon. You guys know Neil Mercer over at http://www.kanuka.co.nz/

Cheers

Hi Guys.  Thanks for the welcome.  SDHNTR, the animal that looks looks a dog is a Dingo.  Its our native dog.  They are one wary animal.  This one was having a bit of a drink and a lie down in the waterhole behind me.  There was a stiff breeze in my face.  I crept forward to take the shot and thid Dog still got onto me and started trotting off.  I nailed it at about 150.  The double rifle is a 400 Jeffery Double.  Originally an Indian Maharaja's gun.  Nice piece and worth a few grand.

SoCalHunter.  The little critter is a piglet I caught.  Funny colour, he was bright orange.  Not striped at all.  Just orange all over.

Thanks again for the welcome guys,

Jesse I haven't heard of that Mercer chap either.

So what are the main states or locations in the US that are best for wild pig hunting???

I lived in the states (DC & LA) for 2 years many years ago with my family, but I really don't know too much about the other states...

Hi guys,

Hope you are all well,

Tomorrow I'm heading up to the Northern territory for 2 weeks pig & buff shooting in an area of Arnhem Land with an aboriginal mate (& his family) from work - so I can't wait to shoot my very first Buffalo and hopefully get some very large pigs as well (as the area is renound for them)! The only problem is that the area is also full of man eating salt water crocs (Crocodile Dundee country!) so I must admit I'm a bit nervous about the crocs. (So if I do get taken it was nice being on Jesses forum for a week or two!...lol).

I'll give an update when I return on the 9th July (hopefully!!...lol).

Take care all,

Ciao, Matt

Scorpio 4 Pigs,

    To answer your question...

Texas, California and Florida are the three states with the greatest populations of feral hogs.

Hi guys

Hope you are all well and hope the hunting is good.

Just got back from the northern territory several days ago.

What an amazing two weeks it was...apart from the amazing scenery and plentiful game (we got plenty of pigs and a few buff) it was just wonderful being in the centre of Arnhem Land away from everything.

The .7mmRM with the 175g Woodleigh protected point bullets worked majically on the buff & pigs - dropped them straight away which was a huge relief!
