Australia Kangaroo

Does anybody know if there is still legal hunting of Kangaroo in Australia and if there are any guides in the Sydney area that can do a one or two day hunt? I'll be in Australia in December. Thought it'd be kinda cool.

Yeah Roo hunting is very legal in Australia. Aussie farmers are crying out for shooters to come onto their property and shoot because they are a menace. Most farmers will let you shoot on their property as long as you look reasonable( ie not RAMBO). Not sure who to contact in Sydney though as im on the other side of the country. You could try the SSAA(Sporting Shooters Association of Australia) or even the NRA in the US as they have an affiliated NRA here that would certainly know.

Cruising the net and I came across this thread and I thought I could help.
Shooting kangaroos is only legal under certain conditions, on the Eastern coast that is, I can’t speak with authority on its legality in W.A..
In S.A., Vic, N.S.W. and Qld you must either be a registered professional roo shooter with the appropriate licences or you must be a land manager issued with a permit from National Parks and Wildlife giving you permission to interfere with a protected species. All kangaroo numbers are monitored and a strict quota system applies to the permits. A land manager can nominate a shooter on his application and the nominated person and the permit applicant are the only ones legally able to shoot the roos.
Except for wing shooting birds (ducks, quail etc which have seasons and require a license) all native Australian species (animals and birds) are protected by law and there killing attracts large fines.
All this doesn’t stop roos from being shot outside the system though. Many land managers give tacit approval to shooters to shoot roos for dog meat or pig bait or whatever and it is estimated that at least 500,000 roos are shot each year without permits.

While you are here you might want to shoot some pig, goats or deer though. Here is a link to a good guide who can help you if you are near Sydney.

If you would like to hunt roo's in Australia i would personaly ring arround a few large properties and see if they have a roo problem.If so they may give you a few permits.My father and i get wallaby permits each year,but the roo in tassy are far and few between.It costs five Dollars a permit for Forester roo in tassy,and you have to be either a proffesional hunter or a land owner to be elligable to obtain one.


I amagine you are not a land owner in Australia? So my best advice would be to find one,and ask his permition.As he will have all the relivant permits,and may have a major problem with them as some Ausy farmers do.I only wish my advice could be of more help.I do not personaly know any major title holders,but the big farms are easy to find.Sheep farmers and cow farmers are the ones most likley to have a problem with roos,the grass can't grow quik enough down here.I hope you get a few!

I went downunder about 6 yrs ago and went to a station in Queensland with buddy from Sydney- man we had great shooting- Roo's Pigs, goats, but had little luck with rusa or other big deer.next time i'm going west for some other exoctics like camels- donkeys- etc what a collection of odd let goes.
