I finally got finished cleaning the big ol Axis Deer I shot this evening. I didn't know that they weighed so dern much. It was just a pound shy of 200# on the scale (on the hoof). It weighed 122# with the meat and bones that went into the cooler. WOW.. It nearly kicked my but

I did some welding for a friend of mine and in return I got an Axis Buck hunt out of the deal. I probably put in about $600.00 worth of welding in for the trade. I guess thats not so bad considering that the hunts I found available were any where from $1,200.00 to $1,700.00 for a Trophy Axis Buck..

I shot the buck at 122 steps from the group of trees I was standing in to the opening in the field where I shot him. I was using a 264 Win Mag with 100 grain nosler partitions. He still ran about 60 yards even though I took out his Aorta on the top of his heart. I took him by the Fire Station and one of the other Firefighters rough scored him and he said he will go around 135" to 137". Not sure what that means in Axis deer terms but I know that he did have 33" main beams on each side and 6 1/8" bases.. That was a pretty cool experience. I never shot an Axis deer until now and they are a LOT bigger than I thought. If it wasn't for the Game Hoist I would have never got it into my truck. I would have enjoyed to stick an arrow through it but the rancher does not like archery for game since one of the" WALMART HUNTERS"(if your not sure what these people are they are the folks that buy a bow at walmart and are chuncking arrows at deer the next day without any experience  ) messed it up for me so I had to use a gun. Guns take all the fun out of it but it was still a very awesome hunt. Hope you like the pics..

Nice buck, and a great shot.

I'm not really that familiar with the scoring on them either, but he sure looks like a big one when compared to some of the ones I have seen on hunting shows.

Yes I am going to have it shoulder mounted. I checked a couple places today here in Comal County Texas and they ranged from $425.00 to $475.00

I have a neighbor that has been doing taxidermy(spelling???) for about 20 years and has won a lot of contests with his mounts. He had offered to mount a Whitetail for me last year for $150.00 I think I am going to check him out and see if he will hook me up on this buck. He does real nice work. He mounted my father-in-laws 10 pointer 2 years ago and it turned out great. I hope to get it figured out soon so I can get the rack / cape out of the cooler.

What part of Texas are you in? I can score the buck for you for the Trophy Game Records of the World that is administered by the Exotic Wildlife Association in Ingram out near Kerrville. But here are the basics for taking measurements for each side.

1. Take a main beam length measurement following the outside curve of the beam.

2. Take a brow tyne measurement following the outside of the bean curve.

3. Take a caudal tyne measurement following the outside of the bean curve.

4. Take a basal circumference measurement at a 45 degree angle to the burr.

5. Take a main beam circumference half way between the two tynes.

6. Take a main beam circumference half way between caudal tyne and the main beam’s ending point.

7. Add these up for each side and then add the two sides together for a gross score.

It looks like a really nice buck.

I like that Hitch hauler you got for lifting them. Guess you are used to loading them Fat pigs into the Back of your Truck by yourself with that bad boy Huh?

Thnaks for sharing!!!

BTW...
Wanted to mention I like your Website on HickBuilt stuff... some real neat stuff you make there, I am going to save that for referance...

Thanks for the info denvas. I found a chart on the web . I just typed in "Axis Deer Scoring " and found all typed of info.

My buck scored a little more than 136 1/2". I guess that anything above 134" is Gold Medal Class from what I read on a few of those websites. I guess I got lucky my first time out for Axis. I didn't really know what to compare it to though.

I'm in Comal County just 35 minutes North of San Antonio TX. I live at Canyon Lake off of FM 306.

Your right about the Game Hoist. I hunt alone mostly and it is not very easy lifting those 200# + hogs into the truck without the hoist. That is actually a fellas hoist that I went to meet before the hunt to deliver it to him but he didn't show up..Thanks to that I loaded it without much trouble. I am dropping off my Buck today at the Taxidermy Shop near my Fire Station and it should run about $400. for a shoulder mount. I think I will have those guys officially score it as well. Thanks to all for the input and congrats on the buck. I will probably NEVER pay that much $$ for a hunt( $1,200. +) so it looks like this might be the last Axis Buck for a good while. Adios'

H-Hank,

NICE BUCK! The pic on the hanger shows that he is actually a lot bigger than he looks in that first pic on the ground. Very nice, congratulations!

Hey man, I know you posted this a very long time ago, if you ever shoot another access, you should get a wall pedestal mount they’re awesome. They show off an extra foot or two hide.
