I'm looking for hots spots and secret honey holes!

Actually, heading out tonight for first round of scouting. Can't wait. Taking the whole family. Hoping to put the wife and kids on the Grand Canyon Train while I hike my buns off. Can't wait. I should be in the unit by sun-up Thursday. Where should I start? Happy to trade info with future 7west tag holders, or provide Tejon Ranch intel.

I have never hunted elk in this unit, but have seen many passing through.

I see many along Highway 180 between Flagstaff and Valle. South side of the road once you drop off into the junipers.

Early hunt or late hunt ? If it is early rifle or archery you will probably find them in the pines still.

Brent take a left at the forth three strand barbwire gate off 180, go in past the log with the moss on the east side (you will have to look in your rear view to see it) slow down and take a right past the mud hole (if it has rained) keep going down past the third hump and turn right at the shiny natural colored rock. Go in past the forty fifth Juniper that is dead around the bottom. Park, now its the second saddle north by north west. Once you get to the saddle give me a call!! Good luck Bro!!!!

Brent did you talk to the biologist out there. Do you subscribe to Hunting Fool? If so, what may be helpful is that they will give you the phone numbers of their members that have drawn that tag in the past.

I get calls every year on tags that i have drawn in the past and try to be helpful. I also have called members in the past and they have been helpful. I am not trying to sell subscriptions but the membership is $100 a year and i consider it very worthwhile.

Thanks for the advice for my bowhunnt. Special thanks to Rico Suave for the scoop on the honey hole.

Just got back from four days of scouting. I had my wife and two youngins with me. It was more of a family vacation with some scouting mixed in. We had a blast. I was able to drive the unit and get to know the road system. I saw hundreds of cows and calves and a few raghorns. I would have loved to see some big bulls. However, I'm going back in two weeks and will do some hardcore scouting, (and archery deer hunting at the same time.) I did find a dozen areas where the cows are coming out into the meadows. So, when the rut rolls around, the bulls should be there.

Archery deer season will be open thru 9/13 and elk season starts 9/14. I saw three really good bucks in one area. One was a 28" 4x4. He will probably go 180". 100 yds from him were two 3x3's, one about 23" wide and the other about 26" All great bucks.

Now that I know the unit a little better, I'll give the biologist a call.

the bulls are starting to move into the breeding areas now i have noticed. they know what is coming soon. bugle at night or before dawn and listen for replys. then start following them. they are all over that area.

these elk are from 7w but from last year. good luck and post some pics.

I have a 7W tag also, was up scouting this past weekend, and back up tomorrow. Seeing a lot of cows, calfs and raghorns but no big boys with the herds yet. No bugling either. I saw one herd of over 100 elk on monday evening, watched them until dark and the biggest bull was a raghorn 3 pt. The calves look a little young to me like they came late. Last time I saw this was in 2002 and the rut was about 2-3 weeks late, hope its not the case. There is water everywhere so sitting water probably not going to be a good strategy. One track were you able to get more scouting in this weekend? If so how was it looking where you were at? Good luck on your hunt.

I just spent four more days up there. Wow. I probably saw a thousand elk. As you said, mostly raghorns and spikes. I did see three bulls that might have went 300. They were a long ways off and I only had the 10x power at the time. I spent most of the time hunting for deer. I did not see one shooter buck! Brutal. Two weeks prior, I had three ropers put to bed. Dang it. Where are all the deer? I hunted hard. I can tell you where the deer are not. They are not at the top of all those cones or hills. They are not in the pinion, or maybe they are, just not where I went.

I spoke to a Labor Day ATV Celebrator, one of two million that showed up this weekend. He was a hunter and saw five bulls together. They were see down in the meadows. So, hopefully, it will happen in about twelve days! I heard a little bugling each of the last three mornings. I'm all for comparing notes.

Russ: You aren't kidding. The elk are all over the unit from top to bottom. Incredible numbers! I'm finding it hard to sleep.
