Well, those of you hoping that the new deadline and large price hike would better your odds, think again.

AZ had a record number of elk and antelope applicants this year. 139,000

An increase in license fees, a much earlier draw date, and they still had a record number of applicants. It's not looking good

Great, just great. Draw chances aside, I was hoping people would bail out, the GFD would actually make less money and come to their senses that they shouldn't gouge hunters like they do. No such luck, which means we can probably look forward yet another price hike in the near future.

Coues,

Do those numbers include "bonus point only" applicants ? I was hoping it might increase odds if people were applying for bonus points only due to lack of funds after Christmas spending.

I don't know, it just says "applicants". I am sure there are a decent amount of points only, but to me that is a pure waste of money. You have to buy the license and they let you use your CC to apply. There is no way I am aying NR fees for a license with zero chance at drawing the tag.

From the AZ Game and Fish Web Page:

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div>
New elk and antelope draw garners record applications

Arizona's first-ever separate draw for elk and antelope last month garnered a record number of applicants.

"We worked long and hard to spread the word about the new draw for elk and antelope," said Leonard Ordway, the Arizona Game and Fish Department's game branch chief. "We were pleased to see a record number of people applied for antelope permits and the elk application number was almost the same as last year."

The application numbers were:

Species 2007 2006

Elk 102,325 102,653
Antelope 36,813 31,435
Total 139,138 134,088

Ordway said this new early drawing was actually created at the request of hunters themselves. The new draw allows them to find out whether or not they are drawn for elk and antelope prior to applying for deer, turkey and other species.

"This is better customer service all the way around. We're glad to see it is working out so well and judging by the application numbers, it looks like most everyone got the word. With the large number of hunters, that is quite an accomplishment in itself," Ordway says.[/b]

The game and fish employee was probably refering to elk only. Going off what Coues posted it looks like the number of Elk apps actually did go down. Not by much (LOL), but they did go down

The increase in speed goat tags is what made it a "record breaker."

Rumor is that Antelope will soon go to a once in a lifetime hunt. That's why the surge in apps.

Yes, statistically, the elks were the same as last year. Some people were speculating that there would be a huge drop off in apps because of the early deadline and price increase. The slim chance of greater draw odds probably convinced some people to put in that would otherwise have skipped.

I too wonder how many of those apps were for points only. Hopefully a lot of em.

Good Luck, hope you guys draw something good!

The regs state that the draw results will be available on the 16th of April, and successful applicants will be notified by the 27th. It doesn't specify exactly when the draw date is.

That being said, my card still hasn't been charged yet
