Not drawn for elk. I don't get it, I didn't get drawn for elk last year either but it only shows 1 pref pt.

Congratulations on the 6A elk tag and pronghorn tag. You're going to have an awesome elk hunt.

To answer the question about your points not being updated, I believe that is done at a later date. I didn't draw anything and it still shows me with 12 elk points and 17 pronghorn points. My correct totals when updated will be 13 elk points and 18 pronghorn points. I believe they do the points updates at a later date, after the deer and sheep draws are completed, I think.

Dan, depending on the unit you hope to draw.....you may never draw, all kidding aside. I have 4 elk points, the loyalty point and AZ hunters ed will bump me up a few more next year but each year you need more and more points to draw the best units. You need more than 15 points in a few units now. And that's for archery!

They take the first 20% of the tags for each hunt for a true preference (max points) draw. The nonresident 10% cap can fill or mostly in that round. Anyway, the better units take like 7ish points to get there for late rifle bull, 13ish for archery bull, and bukoo for early rifle bull. You can get into other units for a bit less..You will have a loyalty point by then, and it's a good idea to get the hunter ed point, making it a two year less actual point total.

Anyway, I got 10 late bull with 7 points as a second choice, tag #6X, anything less than 100 was a preference tag. I was expecting this tag, looking at the stats beforehand. Think I'd rather just hunt elk more often than hold out longer for the archery tag...Guess I'll see...I was there in 2004 in September, it was awesome, best elk hunt ever for me.

Jeez, I put in for 6A and 6B, I didn't think they were the BEST units. My buddy drew 2 years in a row, but he's a resident.

The hunter Ed point?

Dan,

You get an extra point for driving to AZ and taking their hunters ed class. Your friend didn't tell you? Time to make new friends! Did you put in for 6A archery or late rifle? The archery tag is not easy to draw.

You are talking a point or two less for those, 5ish to a nonresident. Because of the 10% nonresident cap, most or all of the nonresident quota will effectively fill in the 20% max points round, leaving few if any tags to the 80% bonus point round. So yes, the resident part is huge in drawing elk tags back to back. It is pretty much a true preference deal like CO for nonresidents. Yes a few tags may trickle down to the 80% draw, but draw odds will be pretty long...Get the hunter education point. I know if you look up Don Martin of Arizona Wildlife Outfitters, you can get info, he teaches the Kingmanm Supplemental class (what you ask for if you call AZGFD)...

I took Don's class years ago. Highly recommend it. That Hunter Ed point stays with you forever. Worth the drive to Kingman but I am only about 5 hours away...

You could take the wife, fly into Vegas, leave her in Vegas, get a rental car, drive to Kingman and be back to the wife later that night:stir pot:

I did the practice test yesterday and almost passed without doing the online course. I figure what I'll do is get with my AZ buddy, do the online course and stay with him one weekend to do the field portion.

I didn't realize that the Hunter Ed pt stays with you forever. Nice Tip, thanks

Dan, a few years ago I drew my 2nd choice archery bull tag with 7 points. This year I drew the same tag as a 2nd choice with 7 points.
If you put in for the best hunts without maximum points (nr) you are wasting a choice.
I gave up on unit 9 archery bull because I don't want to wait 20 + years to draw a tag.

Dann, you need to get the hunter ed point. I took my son to Arizona about 12 or 13 years ago to take the class and get our points. Back then, a lot of the current bonus point situation was beyond anyone's expectation. I can remember the instructors telling us that we were wasting our time taking the class, as it wouldn't make much of a difference. They had no idea how wrong they were, it means everything now.

We've drawn some real good tags in AZ, and they weren't all in the glamour units. My son drew muzzy elk with 5 pts in 5B and had a great hunt, taking a nice 6 pt. bull for his first ever elk at 16 years old. Then, he drew a late Kaibab deer tag when he was 18 and shot a big buck a few days after his 19th birthday. A buddy drew a 22south muzzleloader elk tag with something like 8 points, and shot a nice 6 pt. bull. I've drawn unit 9 elk twice, once with no points! However, that was before the 20% pass round went into effect. I'll draw unit 9 in a few years and hunt it one final time. After that, I'm just going to put in for 'regular' units, which are still better than most elk units in other states.

I love hunting in Arizona! BTW, Jeff, you got a killer pronghorn tag. You have a chance to take a GIANT buck on that hunt.

I just took the online hunter ed course, working to schedule to the field portion in June.

What's considered premium areas? Surely not 6A?

What do you consider premium? If hunting a unit where you can have a chance to encounter a 340-360" bull is possible, then nearly every unit in Arizona is premium. 6A definitely has bulls of that caliber. Generally, when people talk about the 'premium' units for Arizona elk, they are referring to units 1, 3A/3C, 8, 9, 10, 23N. That said, the remaining units also have very good elk hunting, and you can kill a 320-340 bull in every unit in Arizona. I've personally seen bulls that would score anywhere from 330-365, depending on the bull, in 22north, 22south, 5BS, 5BN, 5A, 6A, and 7. I've seen bulls that go much larger in 9.
