I saw a thread at another site that AZ wildlife agency may start allowing people to earn an additional point each year by donating time (I think a weekend's worth) to Conservation Projects.

I hear there's a big clean-up project coming soon on the 700,000 acre Boquilla's ranch in unit 10.

If true, my hat's off to AZ....great concept.

Also somewhat sad, was that on a recent Kaibab deer conservation project more Californians showed up than residents. Not only that, but Californians brought the bulk of equipment necessary to get the job done.

So, I'm not so convinced residents do more for wildlife than non-residents any more.

Again, if "Points for Projects" comes thru in AZ, I sure hope they statistically track the number of points earned by residents vs. non-residents....I think it'll be very revealing. I've long said I think that residents and non-resident hunting prices should be steeper to discourage the casual hunters who mostly sit in camp all day and both should be the same price.

I think we need to encourage the casual hunter. Without them we lose Political support for hunting/guns. Hunters are an apathetic group as it is. Hunting should also be an affordable form of recreation and its is for the most part. Its only when you want more and more that its gets expensive.

Should we get rid of the casual fisherman too?

I've lived in Europe and seen what hunting is like when you take out the casual hunter and make it a sport for the "Hardcore". I think our way is a much better method

Dang, COHUnter, when are you running for Mayor? I've beat this deadhorse with a stick too much.

I just hope the "Points for Projects" is for real and not an urban myth. I sure hope it's more than a strawman floating across the commission's agenda.....it's truly a win-win for avid sportsman & wildlife and a much more palatable way of giving "hardcore" hunters added opportunity.

It's real. 48 hours accrued gets a point, one point per year max, species specific.

It's still being finalized though. Should be in place next year.

I'll refrain from commenting on the "casual hunter" topic.

Cool, I'm sure I'm not the first one to think of that one months ago but it's simply awesome seeing AZ do that for wildlife.

It's going to be grueling getting my 48 hrs/yr in but well worth the commute over to AZ....just hoping there'll be a bunch of projects on the NW part of the state--heck the unit 10 Boquilla ranch cleanup would be great~!

O.K.-
So if I send a group of 20 kids from a church group to work for a week using my name as the leader, how many points do I get?

Or what if I send a big donation to AZ DFG,

Just send the donation on over to me and I'll make sure it gets into to the proper account.

And, I have a bunch of weeds in my yard that your group can come over and pull. I'll give each one of ya, 5 points towards a unit 33 Caribou tag.

Each project will have to be approved before hand and your hours will be logged by the person in charge of the project. I think they will have a process by which you can submit your project for approval. You can bet they will have an official on the site to make sure the project is actually being done.

Yes those who do more to help the wildlife will get a point each year, so each year that you help by donating time money or materials you will gain a point so if you and me start out even and I work a project or two(48 hrs worth) a year in 3 years I will have 6 points and you will have 3 points. As you can see if you want to hunt the BIG ELK and DEER you will have to help them first. Should be a outstanding program in the long run.
