I received an e-newsletter from AZ Game and Fish today. Among the topics were that the booklet Hunt Arizona 2007 has been published and is available online as a pdf download. I took a look at it during lunch and had a question on one of the AZ elk units that I've been following: Page 53 lists the Elk Survey Data for the Years 2002-2006 with the following number of bulls in the survey for Unit 6A- 2002, 86; 2003, 54; 2004, 93; 2005, 121; 2006, 12.

To go from 121 bulls in 2005 to 12 bulls in 2006 sounds like some sort of disaster occured in the Unit. What happened to the bull elk population in Unit 6A? Anyone know what time of the year this survey is taken? Thanks for your help

Was it it Archery, Rifle (General Hunt), or Muzzle Loader ?

AZ Jim, It is not the number of bulls taken during a particular season (hunter success in 6A still seems good by any method). It is on a page called Elk Survey Data so it sounds like they do an annual count of the herd breaking it down by bulls, spikes, cows and calves spotted during the survey. The number of bulls seen dropped dramatically in 2006 so I'm wondering if the high hunter success may have taken too many bulls (if the survey is conducted after the seasons). I know QU does something similar with their annual Brood Counts, but those take place before the hunting season (usually in July).

the game warden just couldn't find the bulls period. they also only found like 10 deer in unit 7 not long ago. they are there but hard to find at times.

hunted 6a last year for zero but i had the worst guide and outfitter ever he smoked non stop, walked fast, ate smelly tuna, talked loud, left us on a tank to walk out 3 miles in the dark, stayed in his truck one morning while we hunted, ask where we wanted to go next, kept braging about his $90.00 dollar binos and $13.00 dollar boots. and to top it off the outfitter would not take my calls so if you go stay away from ORO.

I have been hearing this a lot lately. On another board they just riped this guy real bad.It is a shame that these things happen. I am going to get my guides llic this year. I will only guide in unites 6a,5bs and 5a.I will doing it more for fun than anything else When it comes to elk hunting I am very serious.I have a place up there so scouting is almost year round thing. I guess you really have to do your home work.
