OK guys, here's the story. As most of you know I keep a pretty close eye on the hogs around here. It seems to be just our luck that the fort has the knack of shutting down some of the prime hog areas I know real well, and then by the time the rest of crew gets in here on Friday night on those crowded 3 day weekends we can't all fit into the areas we want to hunt. But we've done pretty good anyway, with two missed shots on a hog last weekend. This weekend one area I like real well was open and it looked like this:

Nice hog, don't have a scale here yet but I'd guess him at 200+

Thats one lucky hunter.

BrysonHesperiaResort,
I plan on coming down to FHL one day to hunt hogs as I do not live too far away. Only been one time previously and it was on a deer opener back in 2001, place was a mad house of people. It kinda ruined me.

But since I have been reading your posts I feel I need to give it another try. I nice comfy cabin with a shower, a new meat locker, basically all the creature comforts of home. These coupled with your current scouting reports make's your place very appealing. Your hard work and posts are much appreciated. Keep it up.

Thank guys, nice! No long story, but here's the blow by blow...
<

No one got stuck in the mud, no broken bones, no wild pig chase. Just a happy hunter and a nice big boar
<

Dragging the hog in was the longest part of this hunt.

The gentleman is a avid bear and deer hunter, but had wanted to try wild pig hunting. He arrives Friday afternoon at around 2:00 PM and gets checked in to FHL. Off we go, to check out the Training Area (from the county road), the perimeters, and how to get to the some of the good spots on that TA. I think some of you have been on "The Tour", but basically we do a little drive around the fort (from the county road) and talk/show hog sign, hog behavior and what to look for. On this particular Tour Day, the meat hogs (120lbs) are out on the county road at about 4:00 PM, so my hunter has his first visual with wild hogs. Then we go back to the game room at Bryson Resort, where we have the "Strategic Multiple Hawg Massacre Meeting". Some of you have led this meeting. Anyway, this is where we look at the big maps, mark all the "x''s , make plans A,B & C and mark those plans on our way cool field maps. And only after this meeting are we allowed to sleep, eat or consume adult beverages. Just kidding.

My hunter is in the field at the crack of dawn, driving to the first "x" on the map. There is the boar right where he's supposed to be (that never happens, only in hog fairy tails). He's so big, the boar is mistaken for a cow for a moment. My hunter jumps out, loads and shoots at around 75 yards, by now, this hog's on the move. Nice clean shot, delivered right on the $$ at heart/lungs, 30-06. Beastie boy down at 6:15 am.
<
Now the dragging begins and that's really boring.

I wish all our hunts were that easy, but I do think it's important to be in the field as early as you can instead of in line at the game shack on Sat. morning. This hog's guts were full (completely stuffed) by 6:00 am, so I figure he'd been out chowing from about 11:00 PM. I had a trapper tell me that all a hog does is eat and sleep. 1/2 the day for eating, the other 1/2 for sleeping & digesting. I'd have to say that he was right in this instance. Also this hawg was on the acorns, and that's all he had in him (yours truly got gut detail-thankyou Patriot Archery for the gut gloves they are the bomb).
Bighog, you should come- any weekend but deer opener
<

I'm looking forward to meeting all of you guys I hope...FHL is a great hunt, you don't always go home with a hog but the hog #'s are outstanding, it just takes a little work & time. Warmest regards to all of you, Deedy
