I've seen a pig jump up a dirt embankment that was at least up to my shoulders...It got rid of all the dogs quick...The dogs couldn't make it up the wall and had to find another way around
Bayedsolid is right on. My Houston friend who had the small 70 acre ranch built a 5ft. high hog corral with a one way spring loaded gate and put bait inside the corral. The reason is that the hogs were so plentiful, he was trapping big hogs every night and sometimes there are 2 hogs trapped and squeezed inside the hog trap. So to maximize the effort he got the bright idea to build a hog corral trap. So after everything was set and baited, the next day he had trapped 5 big hogs inside the corral. Well, as soon as he tried snaring them on the leg with a wire lasso, the hogs became extremely agitated and started running back and forth inside the corral. Until finally one hog jumped the 5ft. fence and the others quickly followed and all the hogs escaped by jumping over the fence in short order. He said it was amazing how strong those hogs can jump. Those are powerful animals that barrel thru impenetrable(to us) brush and run up and down the steep hills. 'Nuff said.
I have hunted Hog's Wild as well. I had a great time there. the terrain is rugged as they come. It is definately a hard hunt. I have hunted hogs on various ranches and I can definately say that the hogs in the Hog's Wild high fence area are the most wary and skittish of all. If they even THINK that they MAY have seen you...Bam!! they are gone. I arrowed a very nice boar there in "the saddle" area.
Hunting is all about just getting out there. Having a good time and telling lies by the camp fire.
rwlittle,
Some of our closest calls were in that saddle. Saturday night I had a large group come through just before dark. Unfortunately there were two definite litters of babies in the group and I was not quick enough to determine which were wet sows and which were not. I did not want to shoot the wrong pig, so I had to let them go by. On sunday I was climbing the tall bare peak on the south side and watched a large spotted boar trot through as my cousin tried to get an arrow on his bow. The boar was less than 20 yards away, and put on the after burners when he heard my cousin struggling to get ready.
bay,
My point should have read they take the path of least resistance. Although I haven't seen any flying yet, I have seen them do what I could call a jump...
And please do not get me wrong on the sightings count, it can happen and does, just not all the time. Take a drive around the lakes in north SLO county and you might be very surprised. And disapointed, because what you will see is totally off limits and untouchable....
Just so you all know the fenced area there is 600 acers thats 1 square mile Of steep brushy hunting ( not easy )that is archery only if you dont like fence you can archery hunt the rest of the property. The price cant be beat.
OH and by the way I have seen a pig fly. When my Dad, Brother, and I were in Texas a summer ago, my Dad shot a little meat pig with his 300 Mag and it flew quit a few yards and landed in a ditch where we almost didn't seen it.
Your right. Sometimes I don't know why I bother. It just seems like there have been so many changes in hunting that I don't understand. Land is going, tags are near impossible, and so much public opposition. Sometimes seems like it is becoming a situation of the haves and have nots. I beleive fenced hunts will only exagerate that in the future. There are certain things I think are bad for the sport in the long run and fences are one. Non hunters dont care if it is 6 0r 600 acres. I realize the difference. They see it all the same and lump all in with hunting. I see it as others making me look bad. Didn't mean anything personal to shovelerslayer for posting. Sorry Shoveler. Just decided to vent I guess. I think you should all take a look at what I saw a few minutes prior to my first post on this. Go to the Mule deer forum. Look for the post titled "high Fence Hunts" by freedivr2. Follow the link.
