We got back on Friday and spent all day Saturday processing meat. First let me tell you that Texas has an unbelievable number of hogs. I keep thinking we are going to have a slow hunt one of these days but there is always a ton of them. I shot 2 and my daughter shot 3 and speared 2. This may seem like a lot but if you break them down and put the meat on ice it will fit in three big coolers.

After last years hunt all my 13 year old daughter wanted to do was spear one. Mike the owner of the ranch told her not many men and no woman have done it. If you know Kassandra that is throwing down the challenge. We waited until it got warm and walked the creek edges looking for hogs bedded down in the undercuts. You have to be very quiet and use a lot of scent block or they will bust you and be in the next county in 2 minutes. The first one she got was exciting as it pulled spear and charged me. The kid caught it in the shield with the spear and put it down 2 feet from me and yes I trust my kid. The next one was even better as she dropped through the top of the bed and landed on another pig while she had one on the spear. This pinned one behind her legs. With one on the spear, one behind her legs and a 200 pound boar 3 feet away not running things got hairy real quick. We all ran to back her up. End result was a dead pig at the end of the spear and not other pigs shot out of that group. I was glad I made her wear her snake gators as the one behind her slashed at her but with the gators there was not any cuts.

All in all a very good time with very good people. I did not take many pics of the shot pigs but I did get one of the second spear kill. The other cool thing is that she decided to skin and gut all of the hogs herself. I did help a little but for the most part Kassandra cleaned all of the hogs we got. She was up until 10:20PM one night as she wanted to do it herself.

I know this is a long read but I can not tell you how proud I am of this kid. She is a great hunter and sportswoman and works hard at her schoolwork. As a single dad I could not ask for more. I will always cherish these trips with her.

PS While coyote hunting one night we must have jumped 75 hogs. We did not need more so we let them go. If you can make it east to hunt it is another world!!

Wolfe,
That's one tough girl you have there. Super wow!!! I guess you don't have to worry about the boys messing with her... She will skin them. Nothing better than being with your kid and on a hunt like that. Congratulation on a successful trip!

The ranch is Keechi Creek Outfitters. Mike can arrange anything you want from a spear hunt free range with dogs, Free range feeders and high fence areas. The high fence is not like Big Horn here in Southern California. These are WILD hogs. We hunt them in the creek bottoms and find them bedded down. It is more fun than sitting in a stand over a feeder. I have seen what these hogs will do to someone if you get caught. In the brush there is not the room to run away like in the open areas we hunt here. A lot of the time you are standing on the only trail out of a bedding area. It is sooo much fun!!! Last October when I was there we chased a group of 5 in a field with the ranger. They swam across the creek onto a neighboring property.

sounds like a blast. My little one wants to shoot a hog in a bad way so this looks like a great option

Wow, that's awesome! I think your daughter is more brave then I am. Spearing a hog is on a level on it's own and I won't dare do it. Congrats again.
