Dogs were hammering away hard enough we knew it was a good boar. It was on the side of a hill in some really thick Oak trees. There were some big boulders around and it sounded like they had him backed up behind one. Got up there and that hole in the rocks is actually a natural cave about 20 feet deep and they were in the back of it. The dust was stirred up so bad you could hardly breathe, and couldn't see 6 inches in front of you. Hogs had obviously been bedding in it for some time from how pounded out, loose and dusty the ground was. After a bit of some blind poking and feeling around we felt him and drug him out where we could see something. He tore up the dogs a bit in those tight quarters and blind conditions but not as bad as it could have been. He was a pretty good one. Had 3-1/2 inches.

I had a similar experience with a bear.

When we got to the tree, the bear bailed out and ran down the side of the canyon to the creek below. A minute later, I could hear the dogs bayed, but the sound seemed somewhat muffled. I got down there and saw that they had the bear caught in a cave that was made by three huge boulders.

There was so much steam coming from the dogs and bear that it seemed foggy inside. I shot the bear with my pistol at a distance of about a foot and a half; I had to get that close in order to avoid hitting the dogs that were in there with the bear.

Great post, I think you're askin' about everyone's avatar? Mine stands for no whiners, trespassers, poachers, snivelers, affirmative action appointees, sell outs, liars, etc... Who's next?

Mike,

I was actually just looking to find out about the avatar. It looked like it had a story and it did, and it did.

However, yours sure has a lot behind it.

Orso--I'm assuming your avatar was a hunt at Choppers?? I think I remember you telling the story before.
Like Rifleman's story confirms, if you run dogs around the hills, you always end up in some sketchy situations now and again....but I suppose that just adds to the excitement of it all.
