Bear Hunt Draws 387 Applications On First Day

September 9, 2004

FREDERICK, Md. -- Maryland's first bear hunt in 51 years is already drawing plenty of interest.

The Department of Natural Resources said at least 387 people have applied to take part in the hunt, just one day after the application process began.

The agency also said that starting Thursday, it will accept checks and money orders for the nonrefundable $15 application fee.

The DNR will hold a drawing Sept. 22 for 200 permits that will be issued to hunt black bears. The hunt is scheduled for Oct. 25 to 30 in Garrett County and a section of Allegany County west of Cumberland.

The season will end as soon as 30 bears are killed.
