Here's a quick report.

We hunted Don Smith's Archery Hog Hunt at Tejon. It was a Friday - Sunday hunt in the archery area, just north of the Pig O Rama north area. I'd never seen this part of the ranch, and was feeling like a total rookie on the first morning. Fortunately, my buddy Bruce, who owns The Bow ‘n Arrow Shop in San Diego, was also there. He gave us a few tips and we were off at 6am on Friday morning. Bruce suggested that we go to a certain meadow and walk up to the top of the ridge above to glass. Uh huh. After three hours of climbing, we were close to the top.

By now it’s pushing 95 degrees. I have a steady stream of sweat flowing all the way down and into my boots. At this point, we had not seen a single hog, and we were finding very little sign. We felt like we had been sent up the wrong mountain. Because it was hot, we decided to focus on the shady areas of the finger ridges below. Just then, a doe and a tiny fawn came sauntering by at five yards. That was a real treat. As I’m trippin’ out on the fawn, Zeke spots hogs about a ½ mile below us. We just caught a glimpse of a sow and two piglets. We figured there could be more already down there in the thick stuff. They were heading for the ravine.

We planned our stalk and flew down the hill. When we felt like we were in the zone, we slowed way down, and took opposite sides of the jungle-like cut. Within fifteen minutes, we heard gruntin’, snortin’ and squealin’. The hogs sounded to be just below me, right in the bottom. I tried to get Zeke’s attention by chirping, clicking, and other western Native American bird calls. I could see Zeke through the thick oak trees. I was sure he had heard the hogs and may have already been in position. He spotted the hogs first, and I wanted him to take the first shot. I spotted two hogs below me at 25 yards. I moved up creek about another 20 yards to give Zeke more time to get on the hogs. I found a shooting lane and ranged it. Bearclaw, (Zeke,) was no where to be found. I ranged the creek bottom at 21 yards. Just then, a hog moved right to where I ranged and I got that feeling.

This was a team tournament. Total weight wins entry fees for the next hunt. I figured I had better kill the first hog I came across. I drew back and started to punch the trigger. Luckily better judgment came over me. I remembered, “Breath, pick a spot, and squeeze slow.” I lined up the circles, (peep and sight, let out some air, picked a spot, and squeezed slow. THWACK!!! The hog started spinning like a top, and squealing like no tomorrow. After 15 seconds of that, the hog just fell over, ten yards from where she was first hit. I dropped down into the crick and called for Zeke. He was only ten yards up river. I asked, “Dude, why didn’t you shoot?” His only answer was, “Dude, if I only had a video camera.” He saw the whole thing. He said that he was waiting for me to shoot.

That’s my first archery hog. I was stoked and still am. Actually, part of that hog belongs to Zeke. It was a great team effort. We had an easy downhill drag to the truck, and were the first team back to the meat pole. One down, one to go. Our first hog, only weighed in at 78 pounds. (SDHNTR would have been proud of me for not holding out.) On Friday, only two other hogs came in, one at 178 lbs, and the other at 94.

Bearclaw signed us up for this event, and I appreciate it. I sure wish I knew about Don Smith’s outfit years ago. Don and Shawn Smith are great guys. It was a blast. Zeke is one hell of a hardcore hunter. “Cornbread,” I enjoyed your company. Ya’ll good folk.

I’ll let Cornbread (Zeke’s new handle,) finish the report.

Out.

That is unbelievable. As I stated before, it is all starting to click for you. All of your hard work is paying off. That may sound corny, but I have never met a person where hunting karma has been so obvious. Hundreds of times you exited your treestand having had a chance to shoot legal deer. You did not because you have a vision of what your first deer kill would be like with a bow. You followed your instinct. I have seen it every time you have been in the woods. All the time, money and effort you have put in - it is amazing. Now you have a: bobcat, javy and hog with a bow (all this year) topped off with a 190 class muley and a monster tusker. All due to patience of persicion my man. Im happy for ya partner- Giddie up.

Thanks y'all. It was a blast. I'm wondering where Cornbread is with the rest of the story and the photos. (Actually, in Georgia it's pronounced Conebread.)

C'mon Zeke. Get the kids in bed and let's hear it.

Ok here we go, first off I will throw in Brent's pig photo, and continue from there.

Photo_1.JPG

As we were woring down the cut to where Brent eventually got his pig I was having
a hard time getting anywhere without causing a landslide, rooting + dry conditions
= landslide, so once I heard em grunting I held tight and waited on Brent to
do his thing. I got a visual on the pigs about a minute or so before he shot, and
I have to say I was pretty pissed I didn't have my video camera as planned cause
that was the coolest kill sequence I have ever seen, she did the riverdance and
then fell over within ten yards of where he hit her, great shot Brent.

Well we let gravity help get her down and then went to camp so he could do her up
proper and then got ready for the evening hunt. Though I did see some guy doing his best socal barebutt surfer impersonation sliding down past me, that there was funny, thanks for the laughs Brent.

That evening we saw pigs but were unable to get on them.

Saturday morning I was indecisive about where to go and we tried another area, but
by the time we were able to verify this was the correct area the pigs were already
3/4 up the canyon, so we went back to "One Track's the pig got whacked ridge".

We saw pigs crossing the top of that and off we went to the top of "Mount Too High to Climb" and couldn't relocate them, so I still hunted through the cut and didn't see anything but good sign that a kitty hunts there too.

I decided we needed to press the action instead of waiting to that night and bust some brush so we went about everywhere trying to stir the pot, but saw nothing.

Back to camp to shower and rewater and off we went to another area that is well known to hold pigs at all times, Brent mad the best damn bird dog I have seen and tried to flush em, but we only saw three piglets that evening, right at dark we heard them coming out, but the wind switched and we were toast.

Next morning, Sunday and last day, we know we need to head back to "One Track's the pig got whacked ridge" and get up top before sunup, so off I went, made great time until I had to make a pit stop and ants decided to hitch a ride, nothing like being mid way through that type of business and having fire ants light off on your keister. After I danced a jig and got redressed I boogeyed up to the top in no time, less than a half hour I hear them, and they are big pigs, atleast ten. I circle below and wait them out.

I get big mama 35 yards slightly quartering away and draw back, but let down because they will get closer, why shoot 35 when I can shoot twenty right. Well they work their way to 25 yards and I again draw, Big mama is covered by por so I pick out a smaller one, about 220-250 or so on the hoof, and start the sequence when I hear barking and huffing behind me, atleast two pigs got below me and have me winded but can't see me, well I get back on the pigs in my sight window, which are now staring a hole in my direction, and I try and refocus on the spot, and I jerk it right below her, they take off and so do I.

I couldn't get back on them, and sat another hour and a half and see nothing, we head back and get out of dodge, me with my tail tween my legs, we could have won the pot and hunted again for free cause no team took two pigs, and the top team won with a #175 sow.

That was about the best hog hunt I have hunt, actually any hunt for that matter, Brent, man sorry for dropping the ball, he hiked a million miles trying to help me get a pig, and got carried away at one time by the black flies.

here is my only pic worth posting.

Zeke, dude I feel your post miss pain. The constant replaying going on in your head. The pit gnawing in your stomach. The second guessing yourself and your equipment. The shattered confidence. The self loathing. Been there man, on a buck of 10 lifetimes.

All I can say is, it will make you a better bowhunter in the long run. Turn the pain into positive motivation. It will only make you practice more, both physically and mentally. You'll be ready and far better off when the next opportunity rolls along.

Great pic there. That is an excellent field photo!

Good job all the way around!

That shot is killing me, because up until those hogs got below me I was like ice, I should have busted her ribs at 35 yards, which I told myself I would shoot the first time I could inside 40 yards, but oh well, wish in one hand.

It was a blast, Brent and I had a blast, ready to do it again this weekend, though I believe I might have to get congressional approval for that.

MJB, I just moved from Georgia, except for six years I did in the service my entire life, 28 years, was spent in Georgia, twenty of it in South Georgia.

Now I live in the Socialist Republic of Kalifornistan, though atleast yearly I will hunt Georgia.

Thanks for the offer though, I appreciate it, but if you know of hogs in the Santa Barbara area, now that would be a help.
