Best Camo

Thought that I would get a little survey from the guys hear what Camo you feel is the best and why.

I personally like the True Sage camo pant, jacket, hat and mask by True Sage Camo Co., a company in Sonora Ca. I think Jesse made some reference to it when he went to Reno. Bought mine last year and was amazed at the stealthyness is made me fine moveing across the sage areas of the X-zone this last year.

I use other assorments of camo when hunting D-14 but don't have a favorite. Just as long as I break up my outline.

My rain gear is Cabelas Rain Soft waterproof fleece.

Hey Matt, I went ot Humboldt State in the early 90's. Played football and dated the grandaughter of LP President Mr. Merlot. I had all the keys and access to the lumber company land up there. Should have married that girl for the land access. Some of the best hunting years I ever had. And I can see Real tree as right camo up there. Thought I would share.

A checkered shirt in drab colors can work just as well as any of the commercial camo paterns....LOL Even works well for ducks and turkeys. I killed hundreds of sprig/teal at 30yards or less wearing an old wool jacket in multi shades of brown with blue Levis. Mammals, except primates, are color blind. Although I like and use the new camo patterns, due to marketing they have become a fashion statement. But for deer/antelope I still use my old wool jacket, depending on the weather.

You're dead-on right, of course. For animals that see primarily in shades of grey, all the fancy colors in a lot of the camo patterns are pretty much there to dazzle the eye of the consumer... NOT of the animals.

However, the natural patterns of the better designs DO break up your outline much better than the straight lines of plaid, and way better than straight monotones. The newer designs also take advantage of shades of grey, inserting "space" into a solid outline.

So with that in mind, there's definitely some benefit to using a camo pattern, although a red and black mackinaw jacket on someone with good hunting skills is always going to trump the latest 3-D camo pattern on someone who can't sit still, play the wind, and utilize terrain and natural cover.

By the way, I started using the higher-end clothing, not because of superior camouflage patterns, but because hunting clothes are cut and designed to be comfortable in the field. A pair of Levis gets old fast, after a day of sitting, crouching, squatting, kneeling, and climbing. Hunting clothing based on the military BDU patterns is much more comfortable for all those activities.

One complaint about all the camo I've seen is that the designs don't make use of 'mobility designs' that have been developed for Mountain Climbers...basically, the 'diamond crotch' design...it's made for stretching your legs out. I always wear somewhat oversized trousers or camo sweats for easier maneuverability.

You'd think that some camo knee pads would be in the offering too to make it easier to crawl.

I would like to see some of the lines of Camo Clothes some out with a built in padded knee area. THis would help in the crawls and kneeling that goes on in the bush.

dont use camo for deer hunting. no reason to except maybe bow hunting.

I'm with Spoonbill. Levi's, a red t-shirt, a red bandana, a light longsleeve shirt for sun and scratchy brush, and an orange hat. I have found the camo patterns catch the suns heat and are to hot to be comfortable, especially during the early A zone hunts. Now for duckhunting....
