on saturday it was cold and rainy and windy out, but i had to go out and look for antlers one last time. i thought since it was cold out it would be better so my dog wouldnt get overheated. went to a deer yard in the sage, and found 7 sheds and a skull of a buck that died after it sheded its antlers. 2 of the sheds were old bases only like 5 inches long. i found an old three point, a fresh spike, fresh 2 point, and a fresh set.
the set was 20 feet away from a single tree that i had already been to just three weeks ago. the grass is really short there, and i know they werent their the time before, i wasnt even expecting to find anything there, but since 30 deer were bedded down arround it i thought it was prolly worth taking a look at. i couldnt believe it when i saw that 2 by 3 set only a foot or 2 apart. it was the best rush i have had this season. i calmed myself enough to take my first "as it lay" picture with my cell phone before i grabbed them. it was hard not to grab them but i thought the pics would be worth it.
i have found 4 fresh antlers within 30 yards of that single tree out in the sage brush this year, and i aint done looking arround it yet cause the sage is really thick arround it and i am sure i missed some
that was my FIRST SET EVER! and only 3 weeks old at the MOST
that was my first true spike
that was my first skull that was shedded
my fist shed that i found on a pack rat den
and my first time to spot a shed from in the pickup
"a first of many"
by far the best day of this year and it was in only 2 hours. after that day i cant call it quits yet.
