best rangefinder for the money

hey everyone, i'm looking at getting a rangefinder this coming year and was wondering whats the best for the money . i was looking at the leupold rxII or the nikon monarch 800 whats your opinion of these or some of the others. thanks, hank

I have the Leica 1200 and it performs quite well. Spend a bit more and get the Leica.

Bushnell Pro Scout. Good to about 500 yds if you can hit a boulder or a big tree. Otherwise, pretty efficient out to 400 yds. If you're into shooting at 700 yds, you need something more. But, mine has been incredibly reliable, easy to use, and affordable. Love it.

I have a Bushnell 1000 that I bought 6 or 7 years ago and it works great, never a problem with it.

I also have the Leica Rangmaster LRF 1200. Awesome piece of equipment but certainly not cheap!
Although I did get a $100.00 rebate that helped make it a little less painful to purchase.

Don't buy an OptiLogic...that's what I have and wish I bought something else.

I tried to do as much research as I could before buying another rangefinder. I'd originally bought a Bushnell 400 when they first came out -- some years ago. Even though it was rated for 400 yards -- I was never able to get a reading at that range. I used it a lot in various conditions and never got a reading beyond 285 yards.

I talked to several store owners (hunters all) and they recommended only the "better" rangefinders such as the Lieca -- that was before Swarovski came out with their rangefinder.

I eventually decided to buy the more expensive Lieca 1200 CRF rangefinder. It came the other day and boy am I impressed!

Apparently sunny conditions aren't ideal for rangefinding. They work better when it's overcast outside.
However, even in less that ideal conditions, my Lieca ranges a whole bunch farther than I'll ever shoot at anything!

In the bright sunshine, I got readings of just short of 800 yards! Occasionally I could get readings out to about 900 yards but no farther. Remember this was in the bright sun!

Later in the day to started to become overcast, so I tried it again. I ranged farther and farther until I ranged distant trees at 1337 yards! I ranged the same trees about 4 times and I got a reading each time. The trees ranged were oaks what had no leaves on them so they were a grey color. Right next to them were very dark evergreens and it wouldn't range them.

I tried the same test on a bunch of trees at about 800 yards and the dark evergreens gave a reading every time just like the oaks.

This rangefinder certainly performs as advertised and I feel it was money well spent!

Something else I should say.

I carry binoculars with a strap around my neck since the rangefinder can't really double as a binocular -- in my opinion! I have a rather large fanny pack but by the time I have a sandwich, some water, candy bars, matches etc. in it -- there was never room for the Bushnell 400. So I never carried it unless I had a larger backpack on my back.

The Lieca 1200 CRF is small and light enough to go into a shirt pocket or in it's pouch on my belt! I feel that's a big advantage!

Keep the size of the rangefinder in mind when making your decision. If it turns out to be too big to carry -- it's of little use to you!

I bought the Bushnell Yardage Pro Sport also. Works great and I love it for the price but it is not a Leica. 90% of my use for it is bow hunting and it works perfect, small, single hand operation and accurate. I'd rather put the money into my binos instead of the range finder, assuming I was't buying top end on both. I think I paid about $260 on eBay, brand new.

Oops, my mistake, I have the scout not the sport. The scout is the better model and you can get it for about 210 on ebay right now. I think that is a pretty darn good price.

Bushnell Yardage Pro Scout is a good options, very affordable and efficent. I think thats your best buy for rangefinder.
