Hey fellas (and ladies, if there are any). I'm a newbie to pig hunting and wanted to know if there is one time of year that is better than another for pig hunting (i.e. weather). I've gotten access to some private property where a few pigs have been killed and am going to bite the bullet and buy on of those over priced pig tags. Thanks.

Bottom line, there is no "best". Many people will argue with me on this, but I have never seen 1 month better than any other over the last 15 or 20 years. I have had years where January was awesome and June sucked. And I have had years where vice versa, June was the best and January sucked. I had guys last year from Reno book in February and they all got shooting and saw lots of hogs. So they re-booked this year in February and were disappointed that they didn't see many hogs. Then they wanted me to give them a free hunt because "There just weren't as many hogs as they had expected". Go figure.
Anyway, I would suggest checking out the property periodically and trying to locate some sign. Once you determine that they are there, spend as much time as you can hunting. Good luck.

The best time for pig hunting is anytime you can turn off the idiot box, get outside, and hunt pigs. (Can I get an AMEN?)

Spring is great. Green shoots coming up, the ground is still soft from winter rains, and it's just a beautiful time to be in the woods.

Summer is awesome. If there's limited water sources (hell, this is CA... all water is limited), anyone with a little hunting savvy and a few mornings and evenings to kill should be able to claim a pig (on private property).

Fall is cool. The weather is turning. You can combine your hunt with deer or quail. The acorns are falling, and mushrooms are pushing up through the loam.

Winter is wonderful! The rains are here, and hog tracks are easy to find and follow. Rooting is plentiful, and the temps are nice and cool so you don't have to worry so much about meat spoilage or heat stroke (and not necessarily in that order).

Did that narrow it down?

If you have access to some private land... GO HUNT IT! Spend some time on the ground, and you can determine what the hogs are doing and when... then make up your own mind on the best season.

Thanks to everyone for their input. Apparently there are deer, quail, dove and pig, not to mention a mountain lion, that inhabit the property. I'll go check it out for myself and let you know how it goes. Thanks again for the insight.

Pigs come and go. The best time to hunt is when the pigs are in the property you are going to hunt. Good luck.
