Just don't let them get on the inside of your legs(femoral artery) other than that they can't do too much. Hopefully they will give you a once around and keep truckin and not be persistent. Lots of the times they will bite as well. In my opinion they aren't dangerous enough to be scared of just respect them. But then again I have found myself in a few pig holes that had pigs in them where I couldn't defend myself if I wanted to. Always be on your guard and you'll be ok.
I have never been charged by a pig while unarmed, thankfully. If I did find myself in that situation I think the best bet would be to try to step aside at the last second if possible, or try to climb something if I had time.
Had a few false charge me...not fun even with a rifle. Heard of some using the muzzle of a rifle to try to deflect them to one side when they are up on you...not sure how well that works.
One time a wounded sow charged me three different times...it was a real fiasco. I was busting brush trying to push some pigs out of their beds, and out comes this sow and my hunting partner shot it, but the shot was too far back. So, since I was closer to where the pig ran, I had the task of finding her in the brush. Found her staring at me from about 20ft, pretty pissed of by that point. She came at me, I shot her again at about 10ft, then she angled off of me at the shot and circled around to come at me again. When she was circling around, I repositioned as best I could to try to throw her off. This happened three times before she went down, after taking four bullets. I was running around like a weirdo trying avoid getting ran over by that pig...glad the person who I was hunting with didn't see the whole thing, or I would probably never hear the end of it! The meat on that pig was pretty tore up, needless to say.
..Edited after re-reading original post, which asked what to do to avoid trouble vs. after the charge already in progress. I guess I would either stand my ground and not make any sudden or threatening movements, or climb up something if I felt I could get up it before getting hit by the pig.
