A few of my buddies are trying to talk me into going to Big Horn for a hog hunt. Have any of you been there or heard one way or the other about this place? From what I have picked up, hunting there is just about as hard as going to the supermarket and shooting a hole through one of their deli counters.

It is going to be either a longbow or flintlock hunt in case you are wondering.

Thank's and good day, Raybow

I haven't been. Same as you, I have only heard bad press from people who really enjoy the challenge of hunting.

I went to BigHorn once, and dont think I would ever do it again. I took my little brother for his first time, but it was like hunting at a petting zoo. Not to mention, most of the animals there are "exotics" and we did not see any wild hogs. Just my

There are NO wild pigs there. They are bought from local farms and released on the property. That is why you don't have to have a hunting license or pig stamp to hunt there.

There's been a few posts (mine included) here on the Big Horn Ranch down in the Moreno valley, just search for the posts, you'll find em. Short story; it's a step down from a planted pheasant hunt....at least SOME of those birds will get up and fly and theoretically have a chance of escape. These suckers will follow you down a road..........

P.S. it isn't much of a hunt no matter what weapon you choose, longbow, rocks, whatever. Maybe a pen knife and one arm tied behind your back would be interesting. My opinion; your money would be MUCH better spent going up to King City and hunting with one of the better guide services up there, probably only about $100 more and it's the real deal......

I would not recommend it to anyone except maybe a kid out for his first hunt. Pay $300 buck and go out to tajon ranch for a "pig o rama" if you want to hunt. Personally guided hunts are not much tougher then big horn, (my opinion). I've never been on a guided hunt, so this is just my opinion. From the stories that I've heard, the guide shows you the pig and says "shoot it". Then carries the pig out and cleans it for you. Now I'm sure there are other ways to do it, but thats what I've heard. Would I go on a guided hunt. Well ya, It's something different. why not if the price is right. I've been to tajon twice already and have yet to take a pig. I'll be back, I haven't givin up yet. That's hunting sometimes you win and sometimes you don't. It's enjoyable just being out there. Anyhow, point is don't waste your money on big horn.

Dont do it! it is not hunting. The animals are about as wild as my Labrador. Save another $100 and go on a guided hunt.

A few people I know from at our local archery range went down there just recently. They were down there hunting the exotics. Both took 2 Rams in a day, with the bows. Her's was a red, white and blue Hoyt, she had never hunted before, were not in camo. She is a heavy set lady, not sure how much walking she did, could not amagine it was much however. She makes me look like a little guy at 235lbs.

I have been told if you are looking for an exotic Sheep or Goat mount this is the place to go. From what has been told to me all of the exotics unless you spend extreme high dollar are done in this farm type situation.

The way it was put to me is that you might have to kick the hog or throw a rock at it to get them fair enough from you to take a shot. Not hunting at all.

Raybow,

The guys have hit the nail on the head. I have been to "Big Horn" and it was like hunting at the LA Zoo. The pigs there are nothing but farm raised pigs. The exotics are ok, but I would save another $100 and head up to the King City area for a "Real" pig hunt...Just my 2 cents

SD#2,
In one respect you might think it would be good for your boy cause he would be able to see lots of animals but on the other, much more important, hand I do not think it would be a good idea. What would that teach him about hunting? It is supposed to be a challenge where the animal has a fair chance at retreat. Personally I think this only shows disrespect for an animal and for our beloved sport. It's called hunting for a reason, not killing. This is purely my opinion and I do not at all chastise you for wanting to take your kid hunting. That is very commendable. I do think you would be doing your son a much better service by spending a bit more money and taking him on a Central Coast hunt. He will see plenty of animals that are truly wild and challenging to hunt. JMO, so take it with a grain of salt. I do not mean to offend. If you really want a game ranch, I hear the Cedar Canyon Ranch in Tehachapi is much more challenging.
