Anyone heard of Big Horn Ranch in Riverside for wild boar? It's supposed to be some private ranch for sheep, pig and goat. Anyopne been there? Had success? Waste of money? any input would be great.
Been there. And no, they are not wild boar, just farm raised pigs the owner buys during the season. That's why you don't need pig tags.
The exotics (goats and sheep) do get a little wild as the season gets old and they get chased by hunters and coyotes. They can be a challenge for a bow or pistol hunter, but forget the pigs.
Ditto to what Bishop said. The pigs are a joke. I went with my buddy who was trying out a new gun. He shot a pig out of a group of 5 or 6 and the group didn't even take off when he dropped his pig. They just stood there looking at us like they were hungry and we had food for them. Trust me, you are way better off saving another $1-200 and going up to the Central Coast for a real hog hunt. You will have a hunt with truly wild animals that are actually elusive. You will feel like you acually went on a HUNT rather than a trip to the petting zoo.
This would be my first real hunt and am bringing my 7 yr old boy. Gonna use a bow, not a gun. Are the exotics worth the effort? I'm in Orange County so it's real close. Thanks for the info guys!
Hunting the exotics with a bow would be a decent challenge for a first timer. They do get wild, and the terrain is very steep. Maybe too steep for a young boy. I'd keep a close eye on him. There are steep canyons and cliffs there.
Best thing for a first timer with a young boy would probably be to watch a herd and find a watering tank or trail to try and ambush them.
There are ussually some good heads (horns) there. I'd stick with one of the sheep because there probably better eating than any of the goats. A lot of the goats and rams would make a nice mount.
One thing, if you get there and figure it's not really what your interested in, or you strike out, they only charge you $25.00
And when you finish with that hunt plan on making one of the JHP Pig-o-ramas at Tejon. Just about the same price, for real "wild pigs".
Hey, thanks for the info! I really appreciate it! I think I'll give it a try. I'll let you know how it turns out!!! Oh, one more thing...do you know if hunting licences arerequired? My dad might be coming and he's an out-of-stater....
Well, took my dad, my son and a few friends out to Big Horn Canyon Ranch in Riverside Sunday. Wow! What a cool place! I took a 240 pound hog and had a blast! Saw several huge pigs and lots of real nice looking sheep (Black hawaiians, a few Texas Dalls). I would recommend this place to anyone who wants to have a good time hunting. The guys there were great! Very helpful and friendly. After we left it felt like we had known them for a long time. Again, great place to go and was well worth the money! My 7 yr old has memories that we will share for a lifetime!!!
Wow, I think that is the first good comment I have ever head about that outfit. Just not my kind of thing I guess. To each their own. Glad you had a good time hunting, at the end of the day thats all that matters.
Glad you had a good time there... Also, it's good you were archery hunting.....
Things may have changes since I went there about 3 years ago.... However, at the time that I went, things were quite different.
They had some nice 'horned' animals, which would present a decent challenge for someone doing archery hunting (forget rifle hunting!).
About the wild boars... well, they were more like "farmer John rejects" than wild boar.
The first ones we came accross were a mating pair... both male though! (darn pigs!).
My friend suggested that even though they are farm pigs, they will make good table fare, and that he will 'take' one. He raised his shotgun to shoot, and I told him "Wait! lets see how close we can get". Then we proceeded to walk right up to them!!!!
I SWEAR, if we had whistled, and called them, they would have probably wiggled their tails, and come running!!! NO KIDDING! At this time, I told my buddy that I would not be interested in shooting one, as these are someones pet, and don't quite 'get' what's happenning here.
He decided to pass on the pair, and continue looking in hopes of finding a 'wilder' one. After having lunch, we went looking for them again.... We saw another 2. They just stood there while my friend shot one. The other one got initially startled, and ran may be about.... 20 or 30 yards.... then stopped.... looked at us for 30 seconds or so.... and proceeded to 'munching' on something on the ground !!!!!
It is a good place to take horned animals with archery for a reasonable cost. However, when it comes to pigs... it's just not my cup of tea.
Well, they didn't spook real easy but the first group we came upon heard us and as soon as they saw us the took off running. I took mine with a bow and was very nervous! I know some hard core, experienced hunters might think it was not much of a challenger, but for a beginner like myself, it was. The terrain is pretty rugged and takes a lot out of you. The horned animals were especially jumpy as we didn't get within 65 yards or so of one. They would take off running.
Here's some info on the ranch; as of last brochure all pig's were $290 same with sheep and goat's phone # (909)789-4690 or 845-2754 talk to charlie. i have taken people there for there 1st. time hunting it's close, fairly cheap. and no lic. required. if you don't take anything there is a $25.00 property fee. as far as the animal's there are several types of sheep and goat's, there has been a few russian boar's brought in there also but mostly farm hog's. i think it's a great place for a 1st. timer or someone that's not sure if they really want to get into hunting and all that is involved with it. But if you really want to go on a great hog hunt try camp5 outfitter's (831) 386-0727 in san miguel or hog's wild (559) 935-5788 boaring experiences (805)461-0294. i have a large list of guides in calif if you want/need more info. so cal hunter
Great job... I'm really glad you had a good time especially with your son and dad. Those are definitely memories that will last a lifetime. I wish I couldv'e done things like this with my dad when I was growing up, but he was too busy scratching out a living to raise 6 kids (I love him and miss him just the same). I won't miss an opportunity to take my son out though.
you have got to be joking! I've been on 3-D shoot's that were more challenging,Don't you all understand that this is exactly what help's give legitimate (not real ) hunter's a black eye ! Not to mention that your child now has a distorted view of hunting, This is a free ranging butcher shop that allow's anyone with a weapon to execute an animal at close range. I appreciate the fact that you want to show your kin animal's and a good time, but what's next ? perhap's a range where you yell pull and somebody launche's a CHICKEN , Sorry if I have offended you guy's , but Ca. is a tough state to hunt in and I predict that after you try real hunting you will get discouraged and either become an execution for pay person or quit hunting altogether, I would volunteer to take you and your son out hunting, but I'm afraid I can't compete with barnyard animal killing
I am pretty sure that EVERYONE would agree that this site is out to help other sportsman, no? Well if you believe that is why this site is here, why make such a ridiculous post. You are entitled to your opinion just as eveyone else is, but please keep it to yourself, or at least be courteous about it.
You could have simply said, "Hey, that's not my cup of tea, its not a challenging enough hunt for me". Instead you come off as a jerk by making such a rude post.
Everybody has to get into hunting and becoming an "outdoorsman/woman" in different ways. Some people have never lived in and area that provided a hunting oppurtunity, or a family that was there to show them the right path.
I would rather see someone hunting at this type of ranch than be an anti-gun person anyday, and I think anyone on this board would. In California especially, we are already polluted with enough anti-gun, anti-hunting, and basically anti-everything associated with us sportsman legislation. We need to be encouraging more people to get envolved , and come aboard in order to preserve our way of life.
It's too bad you could not have salvaged your post with your last line, it was only a few words away from capturing the spirit than I have grown to respect at JHP. Where most JHP'ers would have just left out the part about competing with "barnyard animal killing", you had to add even more disrespect to your post.
Just remember, not everyone has an equal opportunity to get starting in hunting, and any start is a good one...
As for azhalvy- Keep up the good work, don't let posts like the previous one get you discouraged. It is a building process, and you have to crawl before you can walk. Keep up the good work. If you stick with the regulars here on JHP, you will have plenty of chances to get in some great hunts with great people. Glad to see that you are sharing the experience with your son, I hope he enjoyed it. I will never forget the first time my dad took me hunting, it was like lighting a fuse that lead to a new way of life. Congradulations again!
