I've been corresponding with 3 gentlemen from Davis, CA, through this forum for a few months and offered to guide them on a hog hunt. Evan Bouret offered to take them in after wild bulls.

Met the three guys at the Kilohana hunter check station at 6:00 AM Friday. We caravaned back to my honey hole on the dry side of Mauna Kea. To say they were somewhat impressed with the abundance of furry and feathered game would be an understatement. During the course of the morning, we saw dozens of turkeys, pheasants, quail, francolin, 2 mouflon rams, and about 30 pigs, all jet black. The total count was 2 nice hogs for the 3 guys, 1 archery and 1 rifle. Lots of pig sign everywhere and shirtsleeve weather up at 7000 to 8000 feet. No other hunters anywhere and this was all on public land.

All 3 guys were absolute gentlemen, very appreciative and highly skilled in the hunting craft. I'd take them again in a heartbeat. What a thoroughly pleasant hunt that was!

I'll let them tell the story and share their photos. Sunday is the wild bull hunt and I think 1 or 2 of them will also try to squeeze in sheep and goat archery hunting. I'm eager to hear how they do.

Aloha for now from the Big Island.

Evan Bouret took the guys on a wild bull hunt. I won't steal his thunder, but rumor has it that they came as close to getting killed as a person can come without actually giving up the ghost. Have they got a story to tell!!

I've been attacked by several grizzlies and by three bulls and you want the largest caliber you can possibly handle. Evan emailed me and has come to the conclusion that his 30/30 is a peashooter when it comes to charging bulls 1000+ pounds in weight and within halitosis distance. Again, it's their story to tell but wait until you read what they have to say and see the photos.

This is a genuine, no BS story of hand-to-hand combat in the wilderness with a monster intent on homicide.

Stay tuned. I'm going back in there a week from Sat to take on some more of those monsters. It really is the equivalent of a cape buffalo hunt, up close and personal. I'll either bring the .458, the 45/70, or the .300 Win Mag. And my buddy who will be going in with me? He's bringing a bow. Yikes!!

Good job Doc,
I think he can get it done with a bow if he have enough kenetic energy and shooting 450 grain arrow minimum and a awfully sharp broadhead.

This pass season I shot a cow elk with a 405 grain arrow with grim reaper mechanical and had the arrow blown further back then I wanted. But it slowed the animal. I then loaded another arrow since the elk stop and had the broadhead pass through and the elk drop immediately. This was done at 40 yards, The Cow elk weighed 318 dressed out. It stood about 5' 1/2" at the shoulders.

My mathews switchback was set at 64 lbs. Now I up the poundage to 67lbs and shooting a 446 gr arrow.

Finally a few pictures. Friday hogs, Saturday billys, Sunday cows, monday turkeys... Cant get more hunting in a long weekend anywhere!! thanks again Doc and Ev for the help. We had a great time and look forward to getting back to the big island sooner than later.

Shawn shot the sow first. We split off from doc and jason early and headed north. We saw a few and decided to do some leg work. Shawn hiked North and westward, and I went south and west. Idea was to arc around back toward each other to cover more ground. To the north, just a few hundred yards from the car was a good sized ravine with a natural spring... a pig honey hole for sure. Shawn was on a group of pigs pretty much right away and shot the sow at a very short distance (15yards) if I remember correctly. I met up with shawn probably about 30 minutes after he had shot. We walked upto the edge of the ravine, looked down on the spring and while shawn was on the phone with jason, a 110lb boar hopped up and stared climbing the other side... about 50 yards away. I was ready and waited for a shot other than a texas heart shot. It had started left to right and had to turn back right to left to continue its climb out. Once it turned right and showed broadside, one easys shot, a 10 yard run and it was a done deal. Pig on the ground!

Great job on the hunt. I was at Mauna Kea this Last weekend saw lots of sign and got close to one sow but she got away. Also tried Puuahahulu for sheep and goats but only saw ewes. And of course I see turkeys when the season is over. Was good fun, hopefully I get one next time.

I'm finally getting everything in order. Trying to get entirely out of debt... I have my condo for sale and hopefully will be out of it by the fall. I'm almost a free man!!! Anyway, I'd like to come out to HI sometime around January for 5-6 days to check it out and do some hunting... who knows, I may fall in love with the islands and just stay. LOL.
