Color me another dude green with envy. What a great life! I don't know that I'd want to be in a 15 ft. boat with a 13 ft. Tiger Shark close enough to see, though. I think I'd be a little bit, uh, anxious.........

When my wife worked for Continental Airlines (before the kids), we'd take off for Kona at least once a month for a 3 day weekend. Stayed at a friend's condo complex right next to the Kona Hilton, within walking distance there to town. Great place for snorkeling and polespearing Parrot fish.

It's been 15 years since we've been to Kona, but have been to Maui a couple times since. Next time we've promised ourselves we'll return to your beautiful Island. It's truly incredible, with the Maui like weather and fishing at Kona to the jungles and big Tuna off of Hilo, and of course, all the game I'd heard of.

A couple of questions; Is OTEC still running their operation there just south of the airport and if so, I wonder how much that's grown in the past 15 years. This was a facility that had 3 ft. diameter pvc pipes going down maybe 1-2,000 ft. deep right off shore, and they used the thermoclines in the water temperature to move water up and down the pipes, create energy, and the water was also used in smaller pipes (totally enclosed of course) to cool down the soil for strawberries to grow, and to circulate thru huge tanks where they were growing abalone, kelp and sea urchins for market. It also drove a turbine for a 5 Megawatt power station. Pretty cool, all that energy and cooling out of cold water differentials right there. A friend of mine worked there named Travis Taramoto. Very good person in many ways, and he's probably about 45 years old now. Doubt if you know him, but if you do, lemme know please.

Mahalo for the great report. We will live vicariously thru you (for now.............). Take care, have fun!!!

OTEC is still there, as far as I know. I don't know the gentleman you mentioned. Aloha for now.

Those pigs come pre seasoned and marinated in overripened fruit. It's a wonder they don't don't cook themselves. I don't think there is any better eating meat in the whole world.
If we can just figure out how to get that kind of growth and flavor on the pigs at Choppers! Not that there's anything wrong with the flavor I reallly like it, but that fruit flavored Island pork is unbeatyable.
Thanks for the posts.

Methinks maybe someone hasn't had a taste of the Prime rib of the sky yet.........Sandhill crane. But I bet those pineapple-chomping-guava-gulping island pigs of that size might be mighty tasty....

Doccherry,
I understand that the State of Hawaii has no reciprocity for a California Hunting License, but rather requires a Hunter Safety Course certificate. Is that correct???? I took the Hunter Safety Course back in 1976 and the certificate is I think lost already. God Bless.

George Washington and I took the hunter's safety course in CA way back when, and I lost my certificate, too. I took the course again in San Diego last year. A non-res hunting license in HI is about $115 and that's for everything that runs or flies. Seriously, if any of you JHO's want to come over here, email me. If you arrange your transportation [Aloha Airlines offers flights from Orange County or Oakland for about 350 bucks round trip] and a place to stay, I'll take you out hunting. November, December, and January are best because you can hunt pigs, goats, sheep, turkeys, quail, chukar, francolin, pheasants, and dove. The summer months are good for pigs, sheep, and goats, but no birds. However, the fishing in the summer is great [ono, mahimahi, ahi tuna, tiger sharks]. If you don't mind going out in a 15' skiff, you'll be in heaven. You pay for the gas for my boat [a 5-hour trip runs about 4 gallons of gas], and I'll provide the tackle and expertise.

Speck mentioned in an earlier post that I'd better be careful or the Big Island will be invaded by JHO-er's. My only comment is that the Big Island will be a better place for it. We really need more CA hunters over here, because they know just how precious the hunting tradition is and how easy it is to lose it.

Come on over, guys, and see for yourself.

Aloha for now.

Im down...I'll host a pig/goat combo hunt. Bring your archery gear and your hiking legs. I'll be on Kauai June 13-September 10. If anyone's cruising out for the summer I could take you on a rifle hunt for hogs and goats (long long hike with no trail), a hunt with dogs for pigs, or archery for goats/hogs. Brings your bass rods too, know some great rivers we can t ake the kayaks on. Oh, and dont forget your surf rods or freediving gear if you're into that...WOOOO, I can't wait

Here's a picture of a friend of mine and thet errain you can expect on the archery pig/goat hunt. Most areas are more wooded than these ridges, full of fruit trees and ancient Hawaiian rock walls. He shot this goat about 7 miles in. You hike to the 6 mile valley and camp for a night or two. It's the best hunting area in the entire world.
