Here is a photo of a lion we took Sunday Morning. We did not use hounds. We tracked him in the snow until we were exhausted and then used a predator call to turn him around and get him to come back to us. It works once in a while. I have done it 18 times now. I never expected it to result in a lion this big!

The lion weighs about 200 pounds . Just for a reference in the photo. I'm 5'10" tall and 175 pounds. The lion makes me look much smaller then he is! The stomach was empty as well. A Lion with a full belly could have as much as 30 pounds or more in his belly. I have filled a 5 gallon pail with elk meat from a lion stomach which was much smaller then this one, last year.

Nice Cat, think I need a bigger gun. Sometimes on my walkabouts I only carry a .22 pistol. The wife just commented "poor kitty", told her she was confused. Lions a LOT smaller than that one have given me a chill, if I saw one that size following me it would be time to change my shorts!

jjhack, did your cat come from WA? He looks like an old boy.

Yes from right near my home in North Bend. I thought he was gonna be old as well when I saw him but the teeth are perfect and no excess wear. I think he is likely about 5 years old. That is young considering lions live to 20YO on average.

We will know when we get the report card back. I have seen 100's of lion skulls in my work. When they are over 10-12 years old the teeth are really getting bad. They tend to be chipped, cracked, broken, or missing. This lion has 100% perfect teeth. Maybe he was "delicate" in his attacks and his eating habits?

That's a great cat JH. It's hard to believe that guy could put on the pounds (even with good genetics) to that level within 5 years. What did the WDFW folks think of him?

I would love to come out to see your skull collection. You did a bear skull for me in '99.

Thanks for sharing.

The lion was shot with a 30/06 and a 165 grain bullet. Lions are not that tough to kill. I normally only pack around a 44 mag revolver. I have killed every one I have shot with the 44 without any struggle.

This was a big lion but he was dead when he hit the gound.

jjhack, do us a favor and post a couple more pictures. That is awesome and the perspective just makes it more worthwhile. I'm jealous as hell that we (Californian's) can't even legally take a cat in another state and legally import him. We suck!
