Rtbx15, I'll jump in here. I have never killed, nor even shot at a pig with a shotgun. However, I have shot slugs out of shotguns.

I would recommend shooting the slug that you can shoot most accurately. Try out a few different boxes and see which ones pattern better.

For me Remington Sluggers pattern the best.

As far as one brand being more potent than another, as far as I am concerned if a pig runs in front of a slug, it is done!!!!

Those slugs are just plain scary!!! To shoot one and see the holes they put through paper at the range.

So long as you are under 100 yards slugs pack plenty of punch.

The trouble is shooting accurately out to 100 yards. Here is a link to some info.

Thanks for the advice, I'll be heading out to the range this weekend to see what slugs do good. As far as the Big Sandy WLA, does anyone have any advice about a good camping site nearby? I heard there is camping at Hunter Ligget but I think it is only on the weekends. I am also curios about the BLM land north east of there. Is that area posted well ?

Just remember thet Big Sandy is rolling hills to the river bottom and is only 850 + acres . I would hit it every day after work, to get a hog,at least 65 times to score 10 hogs. So when the hogs are there its great hunting .

Camp roberts does not open back up to hunting til july 26, but if you mean Big Sandy, early at sun up you might get a hog going back into the canyon to private land or late eve. comming down. I have to goto a wedding this weekend but maybe the next after work.

I've never shot a pig with a shotgun (I have a rifled barrel but I started with a smooth one) but the hole it makes in a Deer is very big and I would believe it would do a fine job of putting a pig down. With a riffled barrel I am accurate out to about 100 yds.

I got back early Thursday from a hunt at Big Sandy. Lowell's advice about where to go was right on. I walked the north east side of the area in the tree line and the canyons and saw lots of fresh scat and roto tilling. I did a lot of walking early in the morning and again late in the evening. Did'nt see any pigs, but did see two deer though. I plan to try again soon, maybe I'll have better luck then......

RT how is the terrain? Were there big hills to climb? Was the wind in your favor? I am thinking of going the 25th then to Camp Bob the 26-27.

The walk from the north parking lot at Big Sandy is a long slope downhill, then it flattens out. It is a bit of a hike to get up to the trees at the east side next to the private property where the most sign is. The rest is pretty flat river bottom. There was no wind to speak of in the morning and in the evening, there was a strong wind coming out of the north west. Good luck...

well I just got back from a drive to Big Sandy, also saw a lot a sign but no hogs, I think they went to the beach. Dont give up they always come through there, you just have to be there at the right time.
