Flatbroke, myself, and some other family desided to brave the elemnets Sunday morning. We knew there would be some activity with all the weather. We were on site at day break.
The quads were parked in side the gate, and we were off on foot. About 20 minutes in my father in law spotted a large Red boar. We had a good idea were he would bed down, so we left him alone to come back later.
Shortly after that, Flatbroke spots 2 hogs working there way through some trees next to open ground. The wind was in our favor, but they were off to the side. After the dogs got down wind of them, the chase was on. Minutes later they had a nice fat sow caught.
We check a nearby canyon for more hogs. Not seeing anything out, we decided we would go try to find the Red boar.
We arrived at the top of the canyon that had the brush we hoped he bedded down in. The wind was coming from different directions. The wind was strongest from the east. So we proceeded to get on the west side of the brush. I worked my way down with the dogs. When I reached the half way point from top to bottom, I began to work side hill, and into the wind. I had gone several hundred yards. No fresh tracks, nothing. The hillside was very steep, with thick brush, and some slides. You could not spot anything.
I was about 3/4 of the way through the brush. There was a very steep slide below me. The wind had just about stopped. Just then Cowboy head straight down the slide. Moving like he was on a mission. I had no idea where the other dogs were.
I guess he was just about at the bottom when he started barking. I could hear brush breaking. Then I noticed on the other side of the canyon, in the open ground, a large Red boar. The hog got about 100 yards up the hill with Cowboy right behind him. Cowboy then grabbed him by the butt. The hog was so mad, he spun to fight. I then noticed 2 more dogs running up the hill to them.
They faught in the open for a couple minutes. The fight then broke back down to the bottom. A few minutes after that I was on site. A couple more dogs arrived. The hog was now down in the creek. There were about 4 foot cliffs on each side of him. He was using them to keep the dogs infront of him. They were baying him, but he would charge and slam a dogs when he had the chance.
I got into position, and finished him with my pistol. Some times these bigger storms that produce a lot of wind and rain, can make the hog hunting very productive. We were done, and home in time to have lunch with the family.
