Dang, that's a heck of a set of tusks!  

On that topic... anyone have a good way to remove the tusks as trophies?  Do you need to cut off the whole jaw, or can you pull them?

I'd like to get me one of them tuskers.  Gotta watch out for those small guys.

    Before I saw the picture, I would have predicted that it was castrated, but the picture indicated different.  
    It is kind of popular to catch boars alive, cut them and then release them again so that their cutters can grow much larger than usual.  Without the testosterone, the boars lose their desire to fight, and thus, are less likely to break their teeth.

Yup, they call them "barrow" hogs.  Good eating too.

Barrow's grow bigger in the body though once they have lost their pills.  Sometimes you get pigs stunted by a few years of bad seasons that are small in body but still big in tusk.  Soil types seem to affect tusk quality too sometimes.

Speckmisser, you have to take the whole jaw right back at the joint coz the tusks go back a long way.  Then cut off the flesh and boil them out.  Or you can be lazy like me and just put them in a tree for a few months and let the flies and ants do the job.  Unfortunate side effect is that the tusks then become very brittle.

I am the guy on the left (without the gun).  Just wanted to let everyone know that this was my huntin' buddy's first pig, so it was pretty exciting for us!  Dwayne from Boaring Experiences was GREAT!  He was able to put us on the pigs that we were looking for and both that were taken were single shots.  (the one in this pic dropped where he was standing!)

I haven't had any meat from the pig in the pic, but had sausage from the pig that I took, last night and it was amazing.  For anyone in the SoCal area, I had Bree's meats in Garden Grove process and they were great!

Thanks for the compliments Robb.  Hope you don't mind the posting of the pict.  If I had a pict of your pig I would of posted it also.  Your pig was also a good boar (230 lbs, 3" tusks, if I remember right).  You both made great shots on both pigs.  I actually felt a little bad afterwards because the hunt was almost to easy.  If I remember we hunted maybe 2 hours total.  Maybe someday if you come back up I can make it a little tougher by walking everyone through the hills for a few hours, hah!

Anyways thanks again and good luck on your upcoming hunts this fall and any spearo trips you have planned.

Thanks for the info, Spud, and welcome to Jesse's list!  

I assume you're doing your part to alleviate the wild hog problems down where it's winter in the summertime?  Look forward to hearing about some Australian hog hunts.
