Sorry to hear this. Hopefully nothing too valuable or sentimental will be lost.Uh oh... River fire is raging outside of Lakeport and is headed toward town and my place. My neighbor just called - the fire tore thru his place, luckily he was able to save his cabin. He thinks my place may be going up now. The area hasn't burned since 1981 and is loaded with brush. Not much to do but wait and see what happens.

Well three weeks after the fire nature is already doing it's thing and recovering from the fire. I went up on Friday and signs of life were everywhere amidst the still-scorched landscape. Many deer were around the lake, including four bucks (one nice big fork, three small ones) and a half dozen does. I saw jackrabbits. squirrels, ant hills, and ducks, and surprisingly there were fresh green shoots coming out of the burned ground in the valley. CalFire crews were hard at work repairing the damage that they'd caused cutting fire breaks. Controlling water flows during the upcoming winter will be a priority, hopefully we get a fairly mild winter. Lots of oaks that look in bad shape - apparently it wasn't the fire itself that hurt them but rather the intensely hot winds that tore thru the canyons. Many still have some green, but a lot have nothing but brown leaves that are all dropping now. Hope they come back. Will be interesting to see how things evolve - I'm pretty sure that the deer hunting will improve, not sure about the pigs due to the loss of cover. We shall see...
