I have some friends planning a trip to Paso Robles with Bitterwater Outfitters in a couple of weeks and they have invited me along. I'm wondering if anyone has been up there recently? I've searched the forum and most everything I've found is pretty old.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Clayton is a good kid. They have some prime land. Good luck.

That might be the ranch I went on to help some clients who were hunting bison and sheep. It was off of Bitterwater and 46. If it is, it was a good ranch with a lot of open area. Definitely not a canned hunt. There were some nice pigs on the property. When I went the guide's name was Mike.

I got a call from a guide that sometimes refers clients to me. He called to ask how some water buffalo were coming along and I asked him if the ranch he guides on sometimes is called the Bitterwater Ranch with Clayton. It's the same. Man, that is a great ranch. It's got so many animals from pigs, to exotics, to bison and water buffalo. It's also what I would call free range. Great place to go whether you go through Clayton or Mike Berry. You'll enjoy it, Weimyowner. Post pictures when you get back.

Thanks for the information. I've talked with him on the phone and got a good "vibe" from him (Clayton).
Are you a taxidermist, Boarhunter? If I do get a nice pig, I would like to have it on the wall. PM with details on how to reach you.
Thanks again!

PM Sent. Let me know what you think of the Asian water buffalo they have on the ranch. When I was there, they didn't offer them yet. Don't let them cut past the front legs on the chest. I should probably do a post sometime on how to prepare a hog for a taxidermist.

The more skin the better
That's true too. What I meant is that hogs aren't like deer or other animals in that their necks are almost as large as their heads and you shouldn't have to cut up the front or back to get the skin over the head. I can't tell you how many hogs I get in where someone cut up the chest to be able to gut it easier when they could have just taken 5-10 extra minutes and worked the skin forward and then cut through the ribs and so forth. Also, most of the hogs I used to get from Tejon were cut all down the back. No need. I'm glad Brian Meadows guides there now. I've done enough business and talked with him enough times that I think he isn't doing that now, but most of the guides do and there's no reason for it at all. If the shield is heavy, just cut relief cuts in the shield only. If you don't know how to skin the head out, leave the head in and cut the neck off and bring it to me or another taxidermist to finish skinning out. I would much rather have a whole bobcat to skin out myself than have someone bring me one partially skinned out figuring they saved me some time when in fact they added time because they didn't know what they were doing. I've even gone on hunts like the one on the Bitterwater Ranch to help skin and take the hides because I wanted to make sure they didn't cut them too short and because I always enjoy watching someone hunt. Weimyowner, did they invite you to watch or to hunt with them? Either way you'll have a blast and I'm jealous.

I just googled it and found this article, just written a few days ago in Western Outdoor News.. Looks like they went on a hunt at Bitterwater.......

MEAT HUNT: Jim Zumbo hunts Golden State hogs

The author said it rated up "first class" and that it was tougher than hunting the flats of Texas and Florida.

Good luck, and have fun! :toast-yellow:
